Which Number Plates Are Road Legal, and Which Are Show Plates Only?

A style by style, font by font breakdown of what we build for the road and what we build for display, with the British Standard rules and the builder choices behind the difference.

The short version: every finish we make, Standard, 3D Gel, 4D (3mm and 5mm), 4D Gel, 5D Gel and Black Diamond, can be built road legal. Legality does not come from the finish. It comes from the font, the character spacing and the colour.

Five of our fonts, 3D Font, Carbon, HiLine, Carbon 3D and HiLine Carbon, are show plates only, and custom spacing on its own takes a plate out of the standard too, even in our regular font. Our plate builder keeps the two paths, road legal and custom show, separate from the first click, so you cannot mix the two by accident.

The one rule that actually decides it

Most confusion about number plate legality comes from mixing up two separate things: the finish, and the font and spacing.

The finish is how the plate is made. Flat printed, raised in acrylic (4D), domed in resin (gel), or a mix of both. None of these finishes are illegal on their own. BS AU 145e allows raised and domed characters, provided they are a single solid shade of black on every visible face.

The font and spacing are the shape of the letters and numbers, and the gaps between them. This is where legality is actually decided. Only the Charles Wright typeface, built to the exact spacing BS AU 145e sets out, is road legal. Choosing a different font, or simply spacing the registration differently, takes the plate outside the standard, whatever finish it is built in.

So a 4D plate is not automatically a show plate, and a plate in our Standard font does not stay road legal just because the font is right, if the spacing has been customised. The two questions, which finish, and which font and spacing, are answered separately.

Our range at a glance

All plates are made to the standard UK size of 520mm x 111mm. Front and rear quantities are set separately, so a single plate can be ordered on its own. How our own plate builder keeps this simple

Rather than leave the road legal and show plate options mixed together, our builder asks you to choose a path first: Road Legal, or Custom Show. Each path then only offers the customisation that keeps it within, or outside, the standard.

Road Legal path

Font and spacing are fixed to BS AU 145e, the builder will not let you change either. What you can still choose:

• A small choice of badge designs, including the EV green flash badge for genuinely zero-emission vehicles
• A border in black, red or grey

Neither option touches the registration characters, so the plate stays fully road legal whichever you pick.

Custom Show path

Spacing is entirely yours to set, and five extra display fonts are available alongside our Standard font. What you can also add:

• A badge from a themed category, such as UK Legal, Carbon Fibre, Euro, Electric Car or a manufacturer badge for most major makes
• A border in black, red or grey
• An optional bottom text line, in your choice of colour, font and size

This is a display plate, built for the look, not for the road.

Whichever path you choose, and whichever font, badge or border you add, none of it changes the price of the plate itself. You pay for the finish, Standard through to Black Diamond, and every customisation option is included.

The five things that make a plate road legal

Whichever finish you choose, a road legal plate from us is built to BS AU 145e in full, meaning:

• Font. Charles Wright, the only typeface the standard allows. No italics, no stylised letterforms.
• Character size. 79mm tall, 50mm wide (except the number 1 and letter I, which are narrower), with a 14mm stroke width.
• Spacing. 11mm between individual characters, 33mm between the age identifier and the rest of the registration, and 11mm margins all round.
• Colour. Black characters, in a single solid shade, on a white retroreflective background at the front and a yellow retroreflective background at the rear. No gradients, no two-tone faces.
• Supplier marking. Our name and postcode, printed at 3 to 10mm tall, positioned close to the characters, on every plate we dispatch.

This standard has applied since 1 September 2021, replacing the older BS AU 145d. It is not a house rule we have added on top, it is the legal specification set out in the gov.uk guidance on displaying number plates and in the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. The DVLA's own INF104 leaflet sets out the same requirements for drivers.

The fonts we only ever sell as show plates

Five fonts in our builder are show plates only, whatever finish you pair them with:

• 3D Font
• Carbon
• HiLine
• Carbon 3D (exclusive to us)
• HiLine Carbon (exclusive to us)

None of these match the Charles Wright letterforms or the BS AU 145e spacing, which is exactly why buyers choose them. Worth knowing too: our Standard font is also available on the Custom Show path, with your own spacing. Choosing the standard letterforms does not make a show plate road legal on its own, spacing has to match the standard as well.

These fonts exist for the look, a bolder or more stylised letterform, tighter spacing, sometimes a carbon fibre effect background, that a compliant plate cannot offer. They are built for static display: car shows, meets, dealership floors, photography, a garage wall, or a vehicle that never touches a public road.

A show plate must never be fitted to a vehicle that is driven, parked, or otherwise present on a public road, even briefly. There is no exemption for a short journey, a quiet back road, or private-feeling residential streets that are still public highway.

What happens if a show plate ends up on the road

The consequences are the same whether the plate ended up there by mistake or by choice:

• The police can issue a fixed penalty for a non-compliant registration plate.
• An MOT tester can fail the vehicle on the plate alone, regardless of the rest of the car's condition.
• The plate itself can be confiscated on the spot if it is judged hard to read, by eye or by an ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) camera.
• A registration that an ANPR camera cannot read reliably can also fail to log the vehicle correctly, which is its own separate problem for the driver.

None of this is a reason to avoid a show plate. It is a reason to keep it exactly where it belongs, off the public road, and to choose the Road Legal path in the builder for any car, van or bike that goes anywhere near one.

A word on "ghost" plates and anything designed to beat a camera

We are sometimes asked about coatings, sprays or covers that claim to stop a camera reading a registration, sometimes called ghost plates or ghost coatings. To be direct about this: we do not manufacture, sell or endorse any product designed to make a plate harder for a person or a camera to read, and our own site is clear that our plates are not for anyone trying to get around spacing, font rules or ANPR. It falls outside what a legal registration plate is for, and it is not part of any range we offer, road legal or show.

Every plate that leaves our workshop, in any font or finish, is built to be as legible as the standard for that plate requires.

What we check before your road legal plate leaves the workshop

From the workshop floor: every road legal plate is measured against a BS AU 145e gauge before it is boxed, checking character height, width and spacing against the standard rather than by eye. Gel domes are inspected under angled light for an even, bubble free finish. 4D characters get a press test to confirm the bond will hold. We also check that the supplier marking and registration details are correct and legible before anything is packed for dispatch.

How to make sure you order the right one

Our plate builder asks you to choose between the Road Legal and Custom Show path before you pick a style, so the two never get mixed up. A few points worth knowing before you start:

1. If the plate is going on a car, van or anything else that will ever be on a public road, choose the Road Legal path. Font and spacing are fixed for you.
2. If you want a show font, custom spacing, a themed or manufacturer badge, or your own bottom text line, that is the Custom Show path, and it is for display only.
3. Measure your plate recess before ordering, especially for a raised finish like 4D or 5D gel, which adds a little thickness. This is the most common reason a plate does not fit as expected.
4. Double check the registration itself, especially O against 0 and I against 1, before you confirm your order. A typo on a custom made plate cannot always be corrected without a reorder.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Are 3D number plates legal in the UK?

Yes, when they are built in the Charles Wright font at BS AU 145e spacing, with a single solid black shade across the raised characters. A 3D plate built in a decorative font or custom spacing is a show plate, not a road legal one, whatever the finish is called.

Q: Are 4D number plates legal in the UK?

Yes, both our 3mm and 5mm 4D plates can be built to full BS AU 145e compliance. The laser cut characters sit proud of the plate, but they still need to be the correct font, height, width and spacing, and a single solid black shade, to be road legal.

Q: Are gel number plates legal?

Yes. 3D Gel, 4D Gel and 5D Gel plates are all available in road legal spacing. The resin dome is a finish, not a font, so it does not affect legality on its own. What matters is the character shape and spacing underneath the dome.

Q: What actually makes a number plate a show plate rather than a road legal one?

The font, the spacing, or the colour. Our show fonts, 3D Font, Carbon, HiLine, Carbon 3D and HiLine Carbon, do not match the Charles Wright font required by BS AU 145e. Custom spacing has the same effect even in our Standard font, since spacing alone can take a plate outside the standard.

Q: Can I add a badge or border to a road legal plate?

Yes. Our road legal builder offers a small choice of badge designs, including the EV green flash badge for genuinely zero-emission vehicles, plus a border in black, red or grey. These sit outside the registration characters and do not change the font or spacing, so the plate stays fully road legal.

Q: What can I customise on a show plate that I cannot on a road legal one?

Q: What is BS AU 145e?

BS AU 145e is the British Standard that has applied to UK number plates since 1 September 2021, replacing BS AU 145d. It sets the required font, character size, spacing, colour and supplier marking for a plate to be road legal.

Q: What happens if I get caught with a show plate fitted on the road?
