What actually counts as a Custom Number Plate in the UK

A custom number plate is any plate where you have chosen the font style, added a badge, picked a border colour or set the bottom text, on top of simply entering your registration. That differs from a replacement plate, which just recreates your existing registration in a standard format because the original was lost, damaged or unreadable. Customisation is not about changing your registration number. The characters are fixed by the DVLA record for your vehicle. What you are customising is how those characters are presented: the typeface, whether a badge sits in the corner panel, whether there is a coloured border, and what small print appears along the bottom. Each of those five choices carries its own legal weight, and some carry none at all. This page goes through each one in turn.

Custom Number Plate fonts: which ones are road legal

Our builder offers six font options: Standard, 3D, Carbon, HiLine, Carbon 3D and HiLine Carbon. Only Standard is road legal. The other five are display and show fonts, intended for off-road use, and none should be fitted to a vehicle driven on the public highway.

Standard uses the Charles Wright typeface, the only font permitted on a UK road legal plate under BS AU 145e. It has a fixed character height of 79mm, a width of 50mm (except the figures 1 and I, which are narrower), a stroke width of 14mm, and set spacing between characters. The reason is straightforward: BS AU 145e specifies a single solid black character in the Charles Wright font, and any raised, coloured or textured typeface falls outside that spec the moment it departs from it. It does not matter how neat the plate is. A beautifully finished 3D plate is still a show plate the second it is not Standard font on a compliant background.

Custom Number Plate badges: what you can and cannot add

Badges are one of the most requested customisations. Our builder offers UK Legal, Carbon Fibre, Euro, Football, Animals, Cartoon and Electric Car badge categories, plus more than 30 manufacturer-style logos.

A badge sits in its own small panel, usually on the left of the plate, separate from the registration characters. Adding a badge does not by itself change whether a plate is road legal. That is determined by the font, size, spacing and colour of the registration characters, not by what sits in the badge panel. This is a nuance a lot of buyers miss: they assume any badge makes a plate “show only”, when a Standard font plate with a UK Legal or manufacturer badge in the correct panel can still be entirely road legal.

That said, not every badge is appropriate for road use. Some novelty designs, particularly in the Cartoon and Football categories, are display only even on an otherwise compliant plate, since badge content and placement can fall foul of general display rules around obscuring characters or misleading identification. Our builder flags which badges are road legal safe, rather than leaving you to assume every option suits daily driving. Custom Number Plate borders: options and legal limits

Border choice is simpler. Our builder offers four options: None, Black, Red and Grey. There is no separate British Standard clause governing border colour the way there is for character font and spacing, but a border still has to sit outside the registration characters without overlapping, shrinking or obscuring them.

In practice a border is a cosmetic choice on a road legal plate, provided the core character spec is untouched. A Black or Grey border on a Standard font plate reads as a subtle frame and rarely draws attention from an MOT tester. A Red border is more of a styling statement and tends to suit a show build rather than a daily driver, simply because it is a less common look on the road. Pick based on how the plate looks against your bodywork rather than worrying about compliance.

Custom Number Plate sizes: matching the plate to your car

There is no legal requirement on the physical size of a number plate, only on the character height, width and spacing within it. That makes plate size a fit and finish question, not a legal one, but getting it wrong is still one of the most common ordering mistakes.

The standard car oblong is 520mm x 111mm (roughly 20.5 by 4.4 inches) and fits most UK cars from the last few decades. Shorter formats exist too: around 406mm x 111mm (16 by 4.4 inches) suits smaller recesses on some hatchbacks and imports, and 355mm x 102mm (14 by 4 inches) where the recess is genuinely tight. A square format around 285mm x 203mm is common on some 4x4s and on older or imported vehicles. Motorcycles commonly use a much smaller 228mm x 178mm (9 by 7 inch) plate.

Whatever size you choose, the character height, width and spacing still have to meet BS AU 145e in full for a road legal plate. That is why a registration with more characters needs enough plate width to keep the legal 11mm gap between characters and the 33mm gap after the age identifier. Squeezing a long registration onto an undersized plate to save space is one of the quickest ways to end up with an MOT-failing spacing issue. Are Custom Number Plates legal in the UK?

The honest, scoped answer is that some custom number plates are road legal and some are not, depending entirely on which customisations you choose. A Standard font plate with a road-legal-safe badge, any of the four border colours, and correctly sized bottom text is road legal, because none of those choices touch the underlying BS AU 145e character spec. Choose any of the five display fonts instead, and the plate becomes a show plate, not road legal, regardless of how neat the badge or border looks.

BS AU 145e is the current mandatory British Standard for plates supplied or fitted since 1 September 2021, replacing the older BS AU 145d. It sets out the Charles Wright font, standard character dimensions and spacing, a single solid black character colour, the correct retroreflective background (white front, yellow rear), and a requirement for the supplier name, postcode and BS AU 145e mark to appear on the plate. Any customisation that departs from those points, most commonly the font, moves the plate from road legal into show territory. Badges, borders and bottom text are part of the build step in our plate maker and do not change the base price of the plate style you choose. Pricing below is per pair, confirmed live on our site, though it is always confirmed again at checkout since prices can be updated.

Single plates are also available, with Standard from around £12.50 each. A fully customised road legal Standard pair, badge, border and bottom text included, still costs £25, the same as a plain pair. You only pay more if you move up to a different plate style such as 4D or gel.

Who should think twice about certain Custom Number Plate choices

Anyone assuming a display font will pass an MOT should think again. Want a 3D, Carbon, HiLine, Carbon 3D or HiLine Carbon plate for a car you drive daily? You are choosing a look that is not road legal, and fitting it can mean an MOT failure and a fine. Choose Standard font if the car goes on the road, full stop.

Buyers chasing an oversized square plate purely for looks, on a car where the recess is genuinely an oblong, should also pause. Forcing a square plate into an oblong recess tends to end in a poor fit and exposed edges rather than the look you wanted. Anyone tempted by a novelty Cartoon or Football badge for an MOT car should check our builder’s road-legal-safe flag first, since some badge styles are display only even on an otherwise compliant plate.

Custom Number Plate material and durability

Material choice sits underneath every customisation decision, because font, badge and border all get applied to a base plate that behaves differently over time. Flat Standard plates use a printed acrylic base and stay looking sharp, since there is no raised or domed surface to catch dirt or fade unevenly. Gel and 4D styles use a domed or raised resin character that sits proud of the surface, giving a three-dimensional look up close, but that raised edge is also where wear shows first, particularly from close-range jet washing.

Badges and bottom text are applied using the same print process as the rest of the plate, so they age at broadly the same rate. A Black or Grey border shows scuffs less obviously than a Red one. Caring for a custom plate mostly comes down to washing distance and product choice. Keep a jet wash lance at a reasonable distance from raised gel, 4D or badge panels rather than blasting close up, and avoid abrasive pads on carbon-effect or domed finishes, since these dull the surface faster than a flat Standard plate.
