Standard Replacement Number Plates

Standard Number Plates

Our Standard Number Plates are manufactured using premium reflective materials to meet UK road-legal requirements. A durable, high-quality finish makes them the perfect choice for everyday driving and replacement plates, and at £25 a pair, they're also the plate most UK cars are actually supposed to be wearing from the factory.

There's no raised acrylic, no gel dome, no diamond-cut facet catching the light on a Standard Number Plate. What you get instead is a flat, correctly spaced, retroreflective plate built to British Standard BS AU 145e: the same standard every plate in our range is built from, whether that's this one or Black Diamond at the top of the range. If you've landed on this page because a plate got cracked in a car park, went missing off the back of a van, or came with a used car looking tired and yellowed, a Standard Number Plate is almost certainly the one you actually need.

What are Standard Number Plates?

A Standard Number Plate is built from a retroreflective acrylic base, printed with black characters at 79mm tall and 50mm wide (the number 1 and the letter I are narrower, that's normal and correct), with a 14mm stroke width and 11mm gaps between characters. Those figures aren't ours to choose. They're set out in the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations and repeated in the DVLA's own INF104 leaflet, and every number plate we cut, from this one up to Black Diamond, starts from the same measurements.

At standard UK size, that's a plate measuring 520mm by 111mm front and rear, the oblong shape almost every car on the road wears. Front plates carry black characters on a white retroreflective background; rear plates carry the same black characters on yellow. That colour split isn't decorative. It's part of what makes a plate legible to a human eye at speed and to an ANPR camera at any time of day, and it's identical across every finish we sell, Standard included.

Standard Number Plate specifications, and what they actually mean for you

Requirement Figure What it means in practice
Character height 79mm Every character on the plate, whatever the finish, is built to this height first.
Character width 50mm (except the number 1 and letter I) Narrow letters are intentionally slimmer; that's correct, not a fault.
Stroke width 14mm The thickness of the printed black line itself.
Space between characters 11mm Checked closely on personalised registrations where owners sometimes try to squeeze spacing to change how the reg reads.
Space between the age identifier and random letters 33mm For example, the gap between "24" and "ABC" on a 24-plate registration.
Plate size 520mm x 111mm (front and rear) The standard UK oblong size almost every car is fitted with from new.
Front plate colour Black characters on white, retroreflective
Rear plate colour Black characters on yellow, retroreflective
Character colour Single, solid black No two-tone or gradient effects on the character face; this is the rule that actually restricts styling, not the presence of a raised or gel finish.
Supplier marking Manufacturer name and postcode, 3-10mm tall Positioned below the characters on every plate we dispatch.
Standard BS AU 145e Mandatory for anything supplied or fitted since 1 September 2021.

What that table actually buys you: a plate that an MOT tester, a police officer and an ANPR camera all read the same way, because none of those three things care about depth or gloss, they care about contrast, spacing and colour. A Standard Number Plate has the fewest variables between "cut" and "reads correctly" of anything we sell, which is a large part of why it's the default fitted to most cars in the UK.

How much do Standard Number Plates cost?

A pair of Standard Number Plates is £25, or £12.50 for a single plate, confirmed at checkout and shown as the first option in our plate builder. That makes Standard the cheapest style in our range, £13 less than 3D Gel, £13 less than 4D (3mm), and £39 less than 5D Gel, our flagship finish.

Set against the cost of getting it wrong, that £25 looks like better value still. A non-compliant plate can fail an MOT outright, and the police can issue a fine of up to £1,000 for one that doesn't meet the display regulations. That's not scaremongering, it's simply what the rules allow for, and it's why buying from a supplier who actually builds to BS AU 145e matters more than the small price difference to a market stall or an uncertified online seller.

Badge and border customisation, available at the same builder step where you choose your plate style, don't add to that £25 price. You're paying for the plate, not for the option to add a flag or a coloured border to it.

Standard Replacement Number Plates

Who should buy Standard Number Plates

Standard Number Plates are the right call for a specific set of buyers, worth naming rather than saying "everyone," because that's not true of any product.

The replacement buyer, whose plate has been lost, stolen, cracked in a car park, or faded past a legible standard, gets back to fully compliant without paying for a finish they didn't ask for. The used car buyer removes a genuine unknown: plates that come with a used car are sometimes made by a market stall or generic printer with no real grasp of BS AU 145e, and replacing one closes that question for £25. The fleet or van operator whose vehicles get washed hard and often at a depot benefits from having nothing raised on the plate to catch, lift or crack under repeated pressure washing. And the daily driver who just wants the reg sorted, rather than treated as part of how the car looks, is exactly who Standard is built for.

It's also, quietly, the plate we'd point most daily-driven, regularly MOT'd cars towards even when the owner is tempted by something flashier. There's nothing on it to catch, lift, yellow or wear unevenly.

Who Standard Number Plates aren't right for

If you want a number plate that photographs well, catches light, or adds visible depth to the car, a flat plate genuinely won't do that, it's simply what "flat" means. 3D Gel Number Plates are one step up, roughly £13 more a pair, for a raised, glossy character that's just as road legal.

If the plan is a show car that never touches the public road, don't buy a Standard Number Plate expecting to "upgrade the look later" with stickers or overlays. Anything applied over a compliant plate can itself make it non-compliant. Buy the finish you actually want from the outset, or ask us about a genuine show-spec plate for static display only. And if you're chasing the most premium look in our range, Standard isn't the starting point. That's what Black Diamond and 5D Gel are for, below.

Standard Number Plates vs 3D Gel, 4D and 5D Gel Number Plates

Every other finish we sell is built on top of the same flat character a Standard Number Plate uses, with one extra manufacturing step added. Understanding that one step is really all you need to compare the whole range.

Style What's added over Standard Price (pair) Look
Standard Nothing, flat printed character £25 Clean, factory-correct
3D Gel Gel resin dome over the printed character £38 Slightly raised, glossy
4D (3mm) 3mm acrylic character fixed on top £38 Raised, matte or gloss acrylic
4D (5mm) 5mm acrylic character fixed on top £50 Deeper raised profile
4D Gel (3mm) 3mm acrylic character, gel-coated £54 Raised and glossy together
5D Gel (5mm) 5mm acrylic character, gel-coated £64 Our deepest, glossiest finish
Black Diamond Diamond-faceted cut into the acrylic £60 (new) Sharp, sparkling, no resin layer

All seven are equally road legal in standard spacing. The difference is entirely how the plate looks and holds up to wear, never how legal it is.

Which Standard Number Plate customisations are actually legal?

Our number plate maker lets you choose a badge image and a border style at the same step where you confirm your plate style and quantity. Both sit outside the area BS AU 145e actually regulates, the registration characters themselves, so in principle neither affects legality. In practice, some badge designs and bold border colours are sold for display use only, because they can interfere with how easily the plate reads at a glance, which is exactly what the regulations protect. The number plate builder marks each option as road-legal-safe or display-only as you select it. A GB or national flag badge and a plain black border are both standard, common choices and road-legal-safe.

Mistakes people make when ordering Standard Number Plates

No V5C to hand. Every legitimate UK plate supplier is required to check proof of entitlement first. Have your V5C or new keeper supplement ready and the builder takes minutes rather than stalling at the final step.

Assuming front and rear are different sizes. They're not. Both are 520mm x 111mm on a standard UK plate. Imports and older vehicles can have a smaller recess, so measure it rather than assuming from the vehicle model alone.

Skipping the legal flag on badges and borders. Most designs are fine, a handful are display-only, and the number plate builder tells you which is which at the point of selection.

Standard Number Plates and the law: what happens if you get it wrong

Worth stating plainly rather than leaving it implied. A plate that doesn't meet BS AU 145e, wrong spacing, wrong colour, poor reflectivity or a missing supplier mark, can fail an MOT outright, and a plate judged hard to read by eye or by an ANPR camera can be confiscated on the spot. A Standard Number Plate built properly to spec avoids both outcomes.

Standard Number Plate delivery and what you need to order

Same-day dispatch on orders placed before our cutoff, with next-day delivery available across the UK. Before we can cut a road-legal plate we need proof of entitlement, a V5C or new keeper supplement, the same requirement every legitimate UK plate supplier works to. Have it ready before you start the number plate builder and there's nothing else standing between you and a plate on your car within a day or two.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Standard Number Plate legal for my MOT?
Yes, provided it's made to BS AU 145e with the correct character height, spacing, colour and retroreflective background, and carries the manufacturer's name and postcode. That's exactly what we build to on every Standard Number Plate we dispatch.

How much does a Standard Number Plate cost?
£25 a pair, or £12.50 for a single plate, confirmed at checkout and shown as the first option in our plate builder.

What size are Standard Number Plates?
520mm x 111mm front and rear, the standard UK oblong size fitted to almost every car from new. If your vehicle has a smaller recess, an import or an older car for example, measure it before ordering rather than assuming standard size.

How long will delivery take?

Same-day dispatch on orders placed before our cutoff time, typically arriving next working day within the UK.

Can I add a coloured badge to a Standard Number Plate?

Yes. Badge and border options are available at the customisation step, and they don't affect the legal status of the registration characters underneath, provided you choose an option the builder flags as road-legal-safe.

What do I need to provide before you'll make the plate?

A V5C logbook or new keeper supplement, so we can confirm you're entitled to the registration before we cut it. This applies to every road-legal plate we make, not just Standard.

What actually happens if my number plate isn't compliant?

It can fail an MOT outright, the police can issue a fine of up to £1,000, and a plate that's hard to read can be confiscated on the spot. Building to BS AU 145e from the start avoids all three.

Do you offer show plates too, if I want something different for a second car?

Yes, but a show plate is not road legal and should never be fitted to a car driven on the public road.

What's the difference between Standard and 3D Gel Number Plates?

Standard is a flat, printed character. 3D Gel adds a raised gel resin dome over the same character for roughly £13 more a pair. Both are equally road legal.
