Black Diamond Number Plates
Black Diamond is the newest style in our range and, so far, the one that gets the most double takes. Instead of a smooth gel dome or a flat laser edge, each character is machined with small angled facets, similar to how a cut diamond is shaped to throw light rather than reflect it evenly across one surface. On a plate this means the registration seems to shift and sparkle slightly as you move around the car or as it catches headlights and street lighting, rather than sitting flat and static like a standard plate.
This explains how the diamond cut process works, whether it is road legal, how it compares with our other premium styles, and what to expect when you order.
How the Diamond Cut Finish Is Made
We start from the same laser cut acrylic base used across our 4D range, then machine a series of precise facets into the top surface of each character rather than leaving it flat or coating it in resin. Each facet is cut at a slightly different angle. Under light, this scatters reflections across the character instead of producing one even highlight, which is what creates the sparkle effect. It is a more involved process than a standard gel topcoat, which is part of why it sits at the premium end of our range.
Where our gel plates rely on a smooth resin dome for their shine, Black Diamond relies entirely on the geometry of the cut. There is no resin layer to wear or discolour over time, since the effect comes from the shape of the acrylic itself.
Is a Black Diamond Plate Road Legal
Yes, when built in our road legal spacing mode. As with every finish we offer, legality comes down to character height, stroke width, spacing and colour, all set by BS AU 145e, not the surface finish. A Black Diamond plate made in legal mode uses the standard 79mm character height and correct spacing, and carries the supplier marking required by law, exactly like our standard, 3D gel and 4D ranges. The diamond cut facets sit within the legal character shape, they do not alter its outline or the required dimensions.
If you want a non road legal version for display or events, our builder lets you switch to show spacing, which opens up closer character spacing and extra styling for plates that will not be fitted to a vehicle driven on public roads.
Will Black Diamond Plates Work With ANPR
A legally spaced Black Diamond plate keeps the same colour contrast between characters and background as any other legal plate, so ANPR cameras read it the same way. The facets change how the plate looks to a person walking past or a driver in another car. They do not change how the camera sees the underlying black character against the white or yellow background. The same is true for MOT testing, where legibility and correct spacing are what is checked, not the finish.
Black Diamond Compared With 5D Gel and Diamond Retro
All three are premium finishes, so it helps to know what sets each one apart before you choose.
• 5D Gel: our deepest gel finish, built from a thick laser cut character topped with a smooth, domed black resin. The look is glassy and rounded rather than sparkling.
• Diamond Retro: uses the same faceted cutting technique as Black Diamond, but styled for classic and heritage plates, including period fonts and the black and silver colour option for vehicles that qualify.
• Black Diamond: the faceted cut styled for modern vehicles, paired with our standard colour scheme and a clean contemporary border, aimed at drivers who want the most striking legal finish we currently offer.
If you are drawn to the sparkle of a facet cut but drive a classic or modified car with a retro look in mind, Diamond Retro is worth comparing before you decide. If you want that same facet effect on a current vehicle with modern styling, Black Diamond is built for that.

Looking After a Diamond Cut Finish
Since the finish is cut directly into the acrylic rather than a separate coating, it holds up well to everyday washing. The main thing to watch is dirt settling into the fine facet grooves, which can dull the sparkle if left. A soft brush with regular car shampoo during a normal wash keeps the facets clear. Full guidance is in our number plate cleaning and maintenance article.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are Black Diamond number plates legal in the UK?
Yes, when made in our road legal spacing mode. The diamond cut facets sit within the legally required character shape and do not affect the height, stroke width or spacing set by BS AU 145e.
2. What is the difference between Black Diamond and 5D Gel?
5D Gel uses a smooth domed resin coating for a glassy, rounded shine. Black Diamond uses angled facets cut into the acrylic itself for a sharper, sparkling effect. The look and the process are different even though both sit at the premium end of the range.
3. Is Black Diamond the same as Diamond Retro?
They use the same faceted cutting technique, but Black Diamond is styled for modern vehicles with a contemporary colour scheme, while Diamond Retro is styled for classic and heritage plates, including period fonts and the black and silver option.
4. Will Black Diamond plates pass an ANPR camera?
Yes, in normal conditions. A legally spaced Black Diamond plate keeps the same colour contrast as a standard plate, so it reads the same way to ANPR. Dirt, damage or incorrect spacing are the usual causes of a misread, not the diamond cut finish.
5. Does the diamond cut finish fade or wear over time?
The sparkle comes from the shape of the acrylic rather than a coating, so there is no resin layer to discolour. Normal washing keeps the facets clear, though dirt can settle in the grooves if the plate is not cleaned regularly.
6. Can I order Black Diamond as a show plate rather than road legal?
Yes. Switching the builder to non road legal spacing gives you closer character spacing and extra styling suited to display and events rather than public road use.
7. Do I need documents to order a Black Diamond replacement plate?
Yes, you will need proof of entitlement to the registration, usually your V5C logbook or a new keeper supplement, uploaded during the order process.
