5D Gel Number Plates
If you already know your 3D gel plates from your 4D laser cut plates, you will want to know where 5D fits in. It is the newest addition to our range and, in simple terms, it is our deepest and glossiest legal plate. We take our thickest laser cut acrylic character, the same 5mm block used on our 4D 5mm plates, and finish it with the same black gel resin we use on our 3D and 4D gel ranges. Put those two things together and you get a character that sits proud of the plate further than anything else we make, capped with a smooth, almost liquid looking dome that catches light from nearly every angle.
This page covers what a 5D gel plate actually is, how it is made, whether it is road legal, how it compares with the rest of our range, and what to expect if you order a pair through our number plate maker.
What Makes a Plate 5D
There is no official DVLA category called 5D. It is a term the trade uses to describe a specific combination of two things that used to be sold separately: a thicker laser cut character and a gel resin topcoat.
Our 4D 5mm plates use a laser cut acrylic character that is 5mm thick, giving a sharp, defined edge and a strong shadow line. Our 4D Gel plates use a thinner 3mm laser cut character with a domed black resin layer bonded on top, which softens the edge and adds shine. A 5D Gel plate takes the 5mm block from the 4D 5mm range and adds the gel topcoat from the gel range. You get the depth of the thicker character and the glass like finish of the resin at the same time, which is why it reads as more three dimensional than either on its own.
In practical terms, that means a slightly heavier, slightly more expensive plate that looks noticeably deeper in daylight and under headlights than our standard 4D gel option.
Is a 5D Gel Number Plate Road Legal
Yes, when made in our legal spacing mode. The gel resin and the extra character depth do not affect legality on their own. What makes any plate road legal in the UK comes down to the font, the spacing and the colours, all set out in British Standard BS AU 145e.
A legal plate needs black characters on a white background at the front and a yellow background at the rear, characters 79mm tall with a stroke width of 14mm, and specific gaps between characters and between the two groups that make up a registration. Get the spacing wrong, even by a few millimetres, and a plate stops being road legal regardless of how it is finished. Every 5D gel plate we build defaults to this legal spacing unless you specifically switch the builder to non road legal show mode.
Like every legal plate we manufacture, a 5D gel plate carries the supplier marking required by law, so your registration is always traceable back to us.
Will 5D Gel Plates Pass an ANPR Camera or an MOT Check
This is one of the most common questions we get about any raised or gel finished plate, and it is a fair one to ask before you spend money. Automatic number plate recognition cameras read the contrast between the dark characters and the light background, not the depth of the character. A 5D gel plate keeps the same colour contrast and spacing as a flat printed plate, so it reads the same way to a camera. Where problems occur, it is almost always down to dirt, damage, glare from direct low sun, or a plate that was made with illegal spacing in the first place rather than the gel finish itself.
The same logic applies to an MOT check. A tester is looking at legibility, condition and legal spacing. A well made, clean 5D gel plate in legal mode has no issue passing. We go into this in more depth, including real examples of what does and does not cause a fail, in our guide on whether 4D plates can be read by ANPR.
5D Gel Compared With the Rest of Our Range
It helps to see where 5D sits next to the other styles we sell, since the names alone do not tell you much.
• Standard plates: flat printed characters, the most affordable option and completely road legal, but no raised element at all.
• 3D Gel plates: a thinner raised character, generally around 1mm, topped with the same gel resin. Subtle rather than dramatic.
• 4D plates, 3mm and 5mm: laser cut acrylic characters with a sharp defined edge and no gel coating. The 5mm version already has real depth on its own.
• 4D Gel plates: our 3mm laser cut character with the gel topcoat added, a popular middle ground between sharp and glossy.
• 5D Gel plates: the 5mm laser cut character with the gel topcoat added, our deepest and glossiest legal option.
If you have already tried a 4D Gel plate and want something with more presence, 5D Gel is the natural step up. If you prefer a crisper, less glossy look, our 4D 5mm plate gives you the same character depth without the resin.
Who Tends to Choose 5D Gel
We see 5D Gel go on newer, higher spec vehicles most often, along with cars that already have other detailing work done, since the finish tends to suit a car that is looked after. It also gets chosen by drivers who have run 4D Gel plates before and want to notice the difference on the next set. That said, there is no restriction on what it can go on. It is a legal plate like any other, so it fits any vehicle that needs a compliant registration plate.
Ordering Your 5D Gel Plates
You can build a pair in a few minutes using our online number plate maker. Enter your registration, choose the 5D Gel style, keep the builder set to road legal spacing, and you will see a live preview of the finished plate before you pay. As with any legal replacement plate, you will need proof of entitlement to the registration, usually your V5C logbook or a new keeper supplement, which you upload during checkout. Orders placed before 1pm go out for same day dispatch.
Looking After a Gel Finish
Gel resin is tough but it is still a coated surface, so it pays to treat it a little more gently than a flat plate. Avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents, keep a jet wash lance at a sensible distance rather than pointed directly at the edge of the resin, and dry the plate rather than leaving it to air dry with hard water on it, which can leave marks over time. We cover this properly, including what not to use, in our full guide on cleaning and maintaining your number plates.
Pricing
5D Gel sits at the top of our gel range, priced above 4D Gel and below nothing, since it is currently our premium finish. Prices can move with material costs, so the live price always shown in the number plate maker is the accurate one to work from rather than any figure quoted elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are 5D gel number plates legal in the UK?
Yes. When built in our road legal spacing mode, 5D gel plates meet the same BS AU 145e requirements for font, colour and spacing as any other legal plate we sell. The gel finish and extra depth do not affect legality.
2. What is the actual difference between 4D gel and 5D gel plates?
4D gel uses a 3mm laser cut character with a gel resin topcoat. 5D gel uses a thicker 5mm laser cut character with the same gel topcoat, giving a deeper, more pronounced raised effect.
3. Will 5D gel plates be read correctly by ANPR cameras?
Yes, in normal conditions. ANPR reads contrast and spacing rather than depth, so a legally spaced 5D gel plate reads the same as a standard plate. Dirt, damage or an illegally spaced plate are the usual causes of a misread, not the gel finish.
4. Do 5D gel plates cost more than standard 4D plates?
Yes, they sit at the premium end of our range because of the thicker acrylic block and the added resin process. Check the number plate maker for the current price, since it can change.
5. Can I put 5D gel plates on a motorbike?
Motorcycle plates have their own size and spacing rules that differ from car plates. Select the motorcycle option in the builder so the dimensions are set correctly.
6. How long does the gel finish last?
With normal care it should last as long as the plate itself. Avoiding abrasive cleaning and harsh chemicals is the main thing that keeps the resin looking clear rather than clouded.
7. Do I need my log book to order a replacement plate?
Yes. You will need to show proof of entitlement to the registration, usually your V5C or a new keeper supplement, which you upload when you order.
8. Can I get 5D gel plates in a non road legal show spacing?
Our builder allows a show spacing option for plates that will not be used on the road. If the plate is going on a vehicle driven on public roads, it must stay in road legal spacing mode.
