Number plates for a new Jeep Avenger or Compass
On a current Avenger or Compass, a flat or lightly raised plate keeps the car looking as it did in the showroom. The Avenger is a small SUV that went on sale in late 2022. The new Compass reached the UK in 2026 and is the bigger of the two. A few ways to match plate to car:
- Avenger: 3D Gel adds raised black resin characters without changing the look much. 4D 3mm adds a touch more shadow.
- New Compass: our pick is 4D 5mm number plates, which cast a stronger shadow and read more premium on darker paint.
- White or silver paint: a flatter finish, Standard or 3D Gel, usually looks cleaner.
Jeep green flash number plates: which Avenger and Compass models qualify
A green flash is a badge on a road legal plate that marks a zero-emission car, and only a pure battery electric car can have one. On a Jeep, that means the Avenger Electric and the battery-only Compass. Everything else misses out:
- Avenger Electric: yes. It has a 54kWh battery, a claimed range of up to about 250 miles and no petrol engine.
- Avenger petrol and e-Hybrid: no. The e-Hybrid is a mild hybrid with a 1.2 petrol engine.
- Avenger 4xe, if you come across one: no. It was announced as a mild hybrid with a petrol engine.
- Compass Electric: yes, for the battery-only versions.
- Compass e-Hybrid: no, as it is a mild hybrid with a petrol engine. The same goes for the plug-in hybrid Compass Jeep has announced.
- Grand Cherokee 4xe and the hybrid Renegades: no, for the same reason.
Replacement number plates for a used Jeep Renegade or older Compass
Most Renegades on the road are used. The car went on sale in the UK in February 2015 and production ended in 2025, so a replacement usually means fresh plates on an older car, and that shapes how much to spend.
If it is a daily runner or a car you may sell soon, a Standard pair at £25 does the job. If you plan to keep it, a 3D Gel pair at £38 costs £13 extra and gives raised black gel resin characters that look fresher without shouting. An older Compass follows the same logic. Spend on the finish only if you will keep the car.
Wrangler, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee number plates
The bigger Jeeps are mostly used cars now. Each has its own quirk:
- Wrangler: Jeep has withdrawn it from European sales, with final deliveries in the first half of 2026, so nearly every JK (2007 to 2018) and JL (2018 to 2026) you see is used. The JL is a 2.0 turbo petrol in the UK. Dark paint shows a raised plate well.
- Grand Cherokee: sold in the UK from 2023 as a plug-in hybrid, so no green flash. It is a large, premium SUV, which suits 5D Gel number plates or Black Diamond. Check the depth of the space first, as 5D Gel is the deepest style we make.
- Cherokee: the KJ was sold from 2002 to 2007 and the KK followed from 2008. One reviewer of the older KJ Cherokee notes that its rear plate sits on the rear wheel cover, so measure the area on your own car instead of assuming a standard recess.
Jeep number plates for mud, trail days and car meets
Raised plates can live with muddy roads, but they need gentler cleaning than flat ones.
- Fix with screws, not sticky pads. Screws are the more reliable fix on a bumper that gets splashed and washed. Pads work best on smooth, flat panels in normal weather.
- Soak mud off with clean water first, then wipe with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Scouring pads and abrasive brushes scratch the surface.
- Go easy with a pressure washer. High pressure can damage a plate and force water under the edge, so keep it low or wash by hand. Our guide to cleaning number plates has the detail.
- Look the plates over after a rough day for loose screws and cracks.
- Keep show plates for display. They are never for public roads. Our article on using a show plate off road or at events explains where the line sits.
Classic Jeep number plates: pre-1980 Willys and CJ models and black and silver
Ex-army Jeeps and old Willys and CJ models are still on UK roads, and black and silver plates come up with vehicles that age. Black and silver is allowed only on a vehicle built before 1 January 1980, and DVLA historic vehicle conditions also apply. Before you order anything:
- Go by the build date, not the date the Jeep was first registered here.
- Check the V5C and the year of build, because an imported or rebuilt Jeep can differ.
- Read our article on black and silver number plates and their legal status.
A Jeep built on or after that date must show a white front and a yellow rear reflective plate. For most classics, a Standard plate with its traditional printed look is the natural fit.
How do I check the space for my Jeep's number plates before I order?
Measure first. We make plates for UK-registered Jeeps only, and the size is always 520mm x 111mm, so the question is whether your car's space takes it. Work through these steps:
- Measure the width and height of the recess or flat area where the plate sits and compare them with 520mm x 111mm.
- For 4D 5mm or 5D Gel, measure the depth too. A shallow recess may not take a deep style.
- Look at the surround around the plate and at any bracket behind it.
- Check the registration against the V5C, letter by letter. O and 0, and I and 1, are the slips caught most often before dispatch.
- Choose front, rear or both (set one to 0 for a single plate) and add a fitting kit if you need new screws or pads.
The road legal builder sets the spacing for you, so the measuring job is about the space on the car, not the characters. Our fitting guide covers the fixing steps, including cleaning the surface and keeping it dry when you use sticky pads.
Jeep number plates in practice: what we would order in three situations
- A used Renegade with a cracked rear plate: choose road legal, set the front quantity to 0 and order a single Standard rear plate at £15. That sits under the £30 free delivery line. Want both plates? A 3D Gel pair at £38 is over it.
- A new Avenger Electric: check the V5C first and confirm it is the battery-only version. Choose road legal, add the plain green flash badge and order the 3D Gel pair at £38. The car keeps a near-factory look.
- A dark Wrangler used for weekend trails: a 4D 5mm pair at £50 gives a strong shadow on dark paint. Measure the depth, fix with screws and wash by hand. Space shallow? Step down to 4D 3mm at £38.
Road legal Jeep number plates and show plates: what the rules say
A show plate is display only, never for public roads. Our road legal plates are made to the DVLA's published rules (BS AU 145e), and we check ID and entitlement documents before we make one. Pick road legal mode in the builder and it sets the legal spacing and font itself. All you add is a side badge and a border, both free.
- The gov.uk page on displaying number plates says a plate that breaks the rules can fail an MOT and bring a fine of up to £1,000.
- The gov.uk number plate rules set out the official rules on colours, lettering and what a plate must show.
- Our road legal number plates page explains the plates you can drive with.
Which Jeep number plates should you buy? Our verdict
Verdict: for a new Avenger or an electric Compass, pick 3D Gel or 4D 5mm, with a plain green flash only if the car is battery-only. For a used Renegade, a Standard or 3D Gel pair is the sensible spend. For a Wrangler or Grand Cherokee in dark paint, 4D 5mm or 5D Gel looks right once you have measured the depth. For a pre-1980 Willys or CJ, Standard is the safe choice, and the black and silver question rests on the build date.

Jeep number plate questions answered
Q: Are 4D number plates legal on a Jeep?
A 4D plate is only legal on the road when it is a road legal plate: reflective, white at the front, yellow at the rear and set to the legal spacing and font. In our builder, road legal mode does that for you. A 4D show plate is display only and must stay off public roads.
Q: What size number plate does a Jeep Wrangler take?
Every plate we make is 520mm x 111mm. Measure the width, height and depth of the space on your own Wrangler, and the surround, before you order. Depth matters most for a raised style such as 4D 5mm or 5D Gel.
Q: Can I fit a front number plate to my Jeep Wrangler bumper?
Wherever you mount it, check the plate shows clearly and is fixed securely. Screws are the more reliable fix on a bumper that gets splashed and washed. Sticky pads suit smooth, flat panels in normal weather. Look at the front of your own car before you order.
Q: Do I have to add a green flash to my Jeep Avenger number plates?
No, it is optional. You can choose no badge, GB with EU stars, UK, ENG, CYM or SCO instead. The plain green flash is only for a zero-emission car, so on an Avenger it is for the Electric version alone.
Q: What should I do if my Jeep number plate is damaged or falls off?
Order a replacement quickly, because a cracked plate or one with sections missing can fail an MOT. Check the registration against your V5C first. Lost only one? Set the other quantity to 0 and order a single plate. A fitting kit adds new screws or pads.
Q: How much do Jeep number plates cost for a pair?
A pair costs £25 for Standard, £38 for 3D Gel or 4D 3mm, £50 for 4D 5mm, £54 for 4D Gel, £64 for 5D Gel and £60 for Black Diamond. Badges and borders are free, so the price depends only on style and quantity.
Q: Can I use a show plate on my Jeep for off-roading?
Not on the road. Show plates are display only, so they suit a meet, an indoor display or the garage wall. Anything you drive on a public road needs a road legal plate, which means fitting the road legal pair for the drive to the event and saving the show plate for when you park up.
