Can I Use a Show Plate for Off-Road or Events?

We get this one a lot from people doing car shows or restoring classics. You want a plate that looks different, maybe with a custom font or design. But the question is, can you legally use a show plate, and where?

What is a show plate?

A show plate is a number plate that doesn’t follow all the DVLA rules for road-legal use. It might have a different font, coloured letters, images, or even a custom layout. These are made for display, not for the road.

People use them for:

  • Car shows and exhibitions
  • Photoshoots
  • Garages or private collections
  • Off-road use (on farms, private land, or race tracks)

They’re great if you want to show off your car in a different way, but they are not legal for public road use.

Can I drive with one?

No. If you're driving on public roads, your plate must meet the legal standards set out in BS AU 145e. That means it has to use the correct font, spacing, reflectivity, and be readable by cameras and police.

We’ve had a few customers think they can pop on a show plate “just for a short drive” to an event. You can get pulled over and fined, even for short trips. Some have even had MOT failures for turning up with one.

What’s allowed off-road?

If you’re driving on private land, like a track day, a farm, or at a closed event then a show plate is fine. You’re not on a public road, so DVLA rules don’t apply there.

We’ve made show plates for everything from vintage rally cars to drift builds. But we always make it clear: they’re not legal for the road.

Our recommendation

Use show plates when your car isn’t going near the road. If you’re trailering your car to a meet or using it as a garage display, that’s the right time.

For everything else, stick to legal plates. You can still customise the look with options like:

These give a premium look while keeping you compliant.
