Replacement Number Plate for Tesla

Need a replacement plate for your Tesla? We make road legal plates for every model in the current UK range, Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X, built to BS AU 145e in all seven styles. Because every Tesla on sale is fully electric, the green flash option is available too.

Which Tesla models we cover

We supply plates to fit the whole current UK Tesla line-up: Model 3, the saloon and highest-volume model on UK roads; Model Y, the crossover version of the same platform, sharing its front-end styling; Model S, the larger saloon with a more conventional plate recess; and Model X, the SUV, similarly conventional in its mounting area.

Worth knowing before you order: Model 3 and Model Y have a clean, minimal front end with no traditional grille, and the plate area is a smooth painted panel rather than a moulded recess. Because of this, many owners choose an adhesive-mount plate holder rather than drilling into the bumper, to avoid screw holes in a painted surface. Model S and Model X have a more conventional recessed mounting area, taking drilled or adhesive fitting equally well.

Fitting a replacement plate on a Tesla, step by step

  1. Check how your current plate is fitted. Plate holder and adhesive pads means no drilling. Screwed directly into the bumper means noting the screw positions first.

  2. If drilling, standard UK number plate screws are typically 5mm or 6mm self-tappers, but check what was originally used, particularly on a thinner Model 3 or Model Y front panel.

  3. If you would rather not drill into a Model 3 or Model Y panel, a third-party adhesive plate holder is a common alternative, fitted with strong exterior-grade pads.

  4. Our plates are supplied ready for either method. We do not pre-drill as standard, so you or your fitter can position holes to match your existing mounting, or fit an adhesive holder instead.

The EV green flash option for Tesla owners, in depth

The green flash is a small green rectangle shown on the left-hand side of a number plate, introduced to help identify genuinely zero-emission vehicles. It is optional, not a legal requirement, and changes nothing about the plate's compliance with BS AU 145e.

Because every current Tesla model is fully electric rather than hybrid, the whole range qualifies where a mixed-fuel brand would need checking model by model. This is one of the few genuine cases where a manufacturer's entire current UK line-up is eligible.

Some owners like the visual distinction, a clear way of showing the car is zero-emission at a glance. Others prefer to leave it off and keep the plate exactly as standard. Both are valid and neither affects legality.

It is commonly understood that the green flash can help with recognition under some local low-emission zones or reduced-charge parking schemes, but this varies by local authority. Some recognise it, some rely on number plate recognition regardless of the flash. Check directly with your own council before assuming a specific saving.

The green flash can be added to any of our seven styles at checkout, so it does not limit your choice of finish.

Which finish suits a Tesla

Tesla's design language is deliberately clean and minimal, little chrome or badging, so a Standard or 3D Gel plate often suits that factory aesthetic well. Plenty of owners choose 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond instead, particularly on Model S and Model X, where more visual depth complements the car's larger presence. This comes down to personal taste, not any rule tied to the model.

Caring for your plate on a Tesla

If you use automated car washes regularly, a raised gel or 4D finish sits slightly proud of the surface and is more exposed to brush contact than a flat Standard plate. Select a touchless setting where offered, or consider a flatter finish such as Standard or 3D Gel. A soft cloth and mild car shampoo by hand is the safest option for any of our finishes.

Common mistakes Tesla owners make when ordering a replacement plate

  • Not deciding between drilled and adhesive fitting before ordering, then finding the new plate has no holes in the expected spot.

  • Forgetting to add the green flash at checkout, then having to reorder if it was wanted from the start.

  • Assuming the green flash guarantees a local authority benefit, rather than checking the actual rules with the council first.

  • Ordering a size other than the plate currently fitted, though every Tesla uses the standard 520mm x 111mm plate, so this is rarely an issue.

Road legal compliance

BS AU 145e is the mandatory British Standard for number plates since 1 September 2021, covering character height (79mm), character width (50mm, except the numeral 1 and letter I), stroke width (14mm), spacing between characters (11mm) and between the age identifier and the rest of the registration (33mm), margins (11mm), and the retroreflective background, white at the front and yellow at the rear, with single solid black characters. The plate must show the supplier's name and postcode. A plate built correctly to this standard, with the right spacing, font and reflectivity, is also what keeps it machine-readable by ANPR cameras. A factory-fitted Tesla plate is normally already compliant, so a replacement should match that specification exactly. We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.

FAQs about Replacement Number Plate for Tesla

1. Does my Tesla qualify for the green flash?

Yes. Every model in the current UK range, Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X, is fully electric, so the whole line-up qualifies.

2. Is the green flash a legal requirement?

No, it is optional. Leaving it off does not affect the legality of the plate.

3. Will the green flash guarantee me a local parking or emission zone discount?

Not necessarily. Recognition varies by local authority and scheme, so check with your own council rather than assuming a specific benefit. Check gov.uk's current rules for the latest guidance.

4. Should I drill into my Model 3 or Model Y bumper, or use an adhesive holder?

Many owners prefer an adhesive holder on the Model 3 and Model Y to avoid drilling into the painted front panel. Model S and Model X suit either method. See our fitting guide for more details.

5. Are your plates road legal on a Tesla?

Yes, all seven styles are built to BS AU 145e, the mandatory UK standard.

6. What size plate does my Tesla need?

The standard 520mm x 111mm size, front and rear, the only size we supply and what is fitted to every current Tesla model.
