Can I Drive With a Damaged or Missing Number Plate?

What counts as a damaged plate?
A damaged plate isn’t just one that’s snapped in half. If the characters are faded, cracked, covered in grime, or peeling off, it can still get you pulled over. Same goes for plates with broken fixings hanging off the bumper. If a camera or officer can’t clearly read it, you’ve got a problem.
Is it illegal to drive with one missing?
Yes. Both front and rear plates are required by law. If either one is missing, you’re technically breaking the law. It can lead to a fine, points on your licence, and even your car being seized in rare cases.
What does DVLA say?
The DVLA states number plates must be clear, secure, and meet the current British Standard (BS AU 145e). That means correct size, font, spacing, reflectivity, and more. If your plate doesn't meet those, it's not legal.
What happens if you get stopped?
