Replacement Number Plate for Smart

If you drive a Smart, working out the right number plate depends on which era of the brand your car belongs to. The tiny two-seat ForTwo and five-door ForFour ran for over two decades before Smart relaunched as an all-electric SUV maker with the #1, #3 and #5. Every one of these models still takes the same UK-legal 520mm x 111mm plate.

Which Smart Models Need a Replacement Number Plate?

Smart has effectively been two different car companies wearing one badge, and both eras are common enough on UK roads that we get replacement plate orders for all of them. Whichever generation you own, our replacement number plates are built to the same physical size and legal standard, so the process is identical whether your car is a 2003 ForTwo or a brand new #5.

From the Original Smart ForTwo to the New Smart #5: A Quick History

The original Smart ForTwo arrived in 1998 as a genuinely tiny two-seat city car, built by what was then part of the Mercedes-Benz group. The five-door ForFour joined a few years later as a more practical stablemate. Both later gained electric versions, badged Smart EQ ForTwo and Smart EQ ForFour, running alongside the petrol models before petrol production wound down, with the last ForTwo built in 2024, closing out more than 25 years of the classic city-car shape.

Smart then relaunched under a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese manufacturer Geely, moving to an entirely different product, mid-size electric SUVs and crossovers under the hash-number naming, the #1, #3 and #5. All three are sold in the UK as pure battery electric vehicles only, there is no petrol or hybrid option anywhere in the current range. The #1 is the smallest and first to launch, the #3 has a sportier coupe-SUV roofline, and the #5 is the newest and largest, positioned as a family-sized electric SUV. If your Smart was registered from roughly 2023 onwards, it is almost certainly one of these three rather than a ForTwo or ForFour.

Two Real-World Smart Number Plate Scenarios

Consider a Bradford-based Smart ForTwo EQ owner whose plate corner cracked after a tight reverse into a multi-storey car park bay, a common scenario given how often the ForTwo is chosen for squeezing into small spaces. The constraint here is cost and speed, a Standard or 3D Gel replacement gets the car legal again without paying for a finish the small rear panel cannot really show off anyway.

Compare that with a Smart #5 owner who has just taken delivery and wants the car to look sharp at weekend car meets while remaining road legal for the Monday commute. Here the constraint is different, the owner wants visual depth and a premium finish suited to a much larger, flatter tailgate, without straying into anything that would fail a roadside check. A 4D Gel 3mm or 5D Gel 5mm plate, built correctly, satisfies both needs at once.

Smart Number Plate Sizes and the BS AU 145e Rules, Explained

Every number plate we make, regardless of finish, is produced at exactly one physical size, 520mm x 111mm, front and rear. This applies to the smallest ForTwo just as much as the largest #5. We do not offer a smaller or short plate size, and no such size legally exists for these cars. ForTwo owners sometimes assume that because the car itself is small, it must be entitled to a smaller plate. It is not, the size is fixed regardless of vehicle dimensions, and fitting anything else would make the car non-compliant.

All seven of our finishes, from Standard at £25 through to 3D Gel and 4D 3mm at £38, 4D 5mm at £50, 4D Gel 3mm at £54, 5D Gel 5mm at £64, and Black Diamond currently at an introductory £60 (usually £75), are built to the same character rules under BS AU 145e. Every plate carries 79mm tall characters, 50mm wide (except 1 and I, which are narrower), a 14mm stroke width, 11mm spacing between characters, a wider 33mm gap before the age identifier, and 11mm margins. The background is white retroreflective on the front and yellow on the rear, with solid black characters only, and the supplier's name and postcode marked in the corner as required.

How BS AU 145e Character Spacing Looks on a Smart Number Plate

Those figures matter more on a Smart than on most cars because the range spans such extreme proportions. On a ForTwo, the rear panel is genuinely compact, so a plate with 79mm characters and a deep 5D Gel 5mm resin finish can visually dominate the small area around it, looking heavier than the car itself. On a #5, with its much larger flat tailgate, the same plate looks proportionate, even understated. The character dimensions never change, but how much visual weight they carry against the bodywork changes enormously across the range. Full technical detail is in our BS AU 145e explained guide.

Which Number Plate Finish Suits a Smart Car? (Suitability Table)

The table below reflects how each Smart model's real proportions interact with our seven finishes, based on the same reasoning our team applies when a customer asks which style suits their specific car.

Smart model Recommended finish Why it suits this car Who it's wrong for
Smart #1 (2023 onwards) 3D Gel or 4D 3mm Rounded LED light bar and chunky arch cladding suit a moderate letter depth and rounded gel edge without competing with the car's busy styling. Buyers chasing the most subtle, factory-anonymous look, better served by a Standard plate.
Smart #3 (2024 onwards) 4D Gel 3mm Sportier coupe-SUV rear rake and available Brabus-inspired trim suit a glossier, more premium finish echoing the car's performance positioning. Lease or fleet-registered cars where a factory-standard plate suits resale simplicity.
Smart #5 (2025 onwards) 5D Gel 5mm or Black Diamond The large, flat tailgate has enough surface area to carry the deepest letter profile without looking disproportionate, ideal for a flagship owner who wants presence. Anyone planning a private plate transfer soon after purchase, who may prefer the lower-cost Standard option meanwhile.
Smart ForTwo (petrol and EQ, 1998 to 2024) Standard or 3D Gel The tiny, pronounced-curve rear panel sits flatter and more securely under a lower-profile finish, without losing visual impact by keeping things simple. Owners wanting a 5D Gel 5mm or thick 4D 5mm look, where the deep profile can appear oversized and is more prone to edge lifting on the curved bumper.
Smart ForFour (petrol and EQ, 2004 to 2021) 4D 3mm or 3D Gel The more conventional five-door hatchback body has a flatter rear panel than the ForTwo, giving a moderate 3D or 4D finish room to sit properly. Buyers intending to sell or export the car soon, for whom a Standard plate avoids unnecessary spend.

Which Smart Number Plate Finish Isn't Right for Every Owner?

It is worth being direct about who our higher-end finishes are not for. If you drive a ForTwo and want the deepest, glossiest plate purely for show, a 5D Gel 5mm plate on such a small, curved rear panel is more likely to look oversized than premium, and the curve increases the risk of the resin edge lifting over time. Equally, if your Smart is a company car or short-term lease vehicle, spending £64 on a 5D Gel plate makes little sense next to a £25 Standard plate, a difference of £39 per plate, when the car will likely be handed back within a year or two.

Which Smart Models Qualify for a Green Flash Number Plate?

The green flash is reserved for genuinely zero-emission vehicles, meaning pure battery electric cars only. The Smart #1, #3 and #5 all qualify, since every current Smart sold in the UK is battery electric with no petrol or hybrid alternative. The older Smart EQ ForTwo and Smart EQ ForFour also qualify on the same basis, they were genuinely pure electric despite being discontinued, so an EQ owner replacing a damaged plate is entitled to add the green flash if they want it. The petrol ForTwo and ForFour do not qualify, regardless of engine size or efficiency. Any local low emission zone benefit varies by council and is never something we can promise a saving on. More on eligibility in our green flash number plate guide.

How to Fit a Number Plate on a Smart #1 or ForTwo

Fitting differs across the Smart range because the bumper and tailgate designs are so different. On the #1, #3 and #5, the rear plate recess is generally flat, with either a captive nut fixing or a panel suited to self-tapping screws, much like most modern cars. On the ForTwo, the plate area is smaller and often more curved than it first appears, so adhesive pads alone can be risky, a plate not fully seated against the curve is more likely to lift at one edge, particularly in cold weather. We recommend screw fixing with a backing plate on a ForTwo wherever the bodywork allows, checking the plate sits flush across its width. Full guidance is in our number plate fitting guide. Whatever method you use, the plate must remain clearly displayed at all times, per the official rules on displaying number plates.

How to Clean and Care for Number Plates on a Smart

Gel and domed finishes, such as 3D Gel, 4D Gel 3mm and 5D Gel 5mm, have a raised resin surface that traps grime along each character's edge, so a soft brush worked around the letters during a normal wash keeps them sharp, rather than wiping straight across, which pushes dirt into the join instead of lifting it out. This matters more on a ForTwo, sitting lower to the ground and picking up more road spray and winter grit. On the #1, #3 and #5, the higher ride height keeps the plate further from spray, but the larger flat panel on the #5 can show water spotting if left to dry in sun, so a quick rinse helps. Avoid pressure washing close to the plate edge on any gel finish, as sustained pressure at a corner can eventually work under the resin. Our full cleaning and maintenance guide covers this in more detail.

Common Mistakes Smart Owners Make When Ordering Number Plates

The most frequent mistake we see from ForTwo owners is ordering the deepest, glossiest finish available assuming it will look proportionate, then finding the plate overwhelms the compact rear panel once fitted. The second is assuming the ForTwo is entitled to a smaller or short plate, there is no such size and fitting one would make the car illegal to drive. A third, common with imported or recently transferred registrations, is ordering before double-checking the V5C logbook matches exactly what is submitted, since a single mismatched character means the plate cannot legally be fitted. A fourth is a surround or frame covering the supplier name and postcode marking, which must remain visible. More in our common number plate ordering mistakes guide.

Smart Number Plates: Our Verdict

Verdict: The Smart range splits into two different fitting and finish conversations, and treating them the same would do owners a disservice. On the classic ForTwo and ForFour, we would steer most customers towards Standard or 3D Gel, since the smaller, curved bodywork rewards a lower profile finish and the ForTwo needs careful fitting regardless of finish chosen. On the new #1, #3 and #5, the larger, flatter panels genuinely suit the deeper 4D and 5D Gel options, and the #5's flagship status makes Black Diamond a reasonable choice. Across the whole range, the constant is the plate size itself, 520mm x 111mm, and the BS AU 145e rules every finish is built to meet.

Smart Number Plates: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does a Smart ForTwo need a smaller number plate because the car is so small?

No. There is no smaller or short plate size available for any UK road vehicle, including the ForTwo. Every plate we supply is 520mm x 111mm, and fitting anything else would make the car non-compliant.

Q: Which Smart models are currently sold new in the UK?

The Smart #1, Smart #3 and Smart #5, all sold exclusively as pure electric vehicles. The petrol and electric ForTwo and ForFour have both been discontinued, though they remain common on UK roads.

Q: Can I still get a green flash number plate for an old Smart EQ ForTwo?

Yes. The EQ ForTwo was genuinely pure electric, so it qualifies on the same basis as the current #1, #3 and #5, despite being discontinued.

Q: Is a petrol Smart ForFour eligible for a green flash plate?

No. The green flash is reserved for zero-emission vehicles only, and the petrol ForFour does not meet that regardless of age or fuel efficiency.

Q: What number plate finish suits a Smart #5 best?

The larger, flatter tailgate suits a deeper finish such as 5D Gel 5mm or Black Diamond, which would look disproportionate on a smaller ForTwo but sits well on the #5's bigger surface area.

Q: Are 4D or 5D number plates road legal on a Smart?

Yes, provided the character dimensions, spacing, colours and supplier marking meet BS AU 145e, which every finish we sell is built to. The finish itself does not affect legality as long as the underlying specification is met.

Q: Why does my ForTwo's number plate keep lifting at the edge?

Usually the pronounced curve of the rear bumper combined with adhesive-only fitting. A screw fixing with a backing plate, checked for a flush fit, generally resolves this.

Q: Do you sell number plates for the older petrol Smart ForTwo as well as the new electric models?

Yes, we make replacement plates for the full Smart range, from the original 1998 ForTwo through to the current #1, #3 and #5, all built to the same specification.
