Top 5 Mistakes When Ordering Number Plates

We’ve seen thousands of plate orders come through, and every now and then, we spot a few common errors. They’re easy to avoid if you know what to look for. Here are the top 5 mistakes people make when ordering number plates.

1. Spacing the characters wrong

People often try to be clever with spacing to spell out names or words. The issue is, DVLA rules are strict on this. Plates must follow the correct format like AB12 CDE. If it doesn’t, it’s illegal. We always fix spacing errors before making your plate, but it’s still the most common thing we see.

2. Picking a font that isn’t legal

There’s only one road-legal font in the UK for number plates. If you try and use italics, bolds, or anything fancy, it won’t pass MOT. And yeah, it might look cool, but it’s still not legal. We’ll flag it before production.

3. Forgetting to upload ID and proof

This one delays orders all the time. To stay within DVLA guidelines, we have to collect ID and proof of ownership before making your plate. If it’s not uploaded, your order can’t go out.

4. Choosing a style without checking the car

We’ve had people order 4D Gel plates for small hatchbacks, then realise later they wanted something more subtle. 3D gel looks clean on most vehicles, while 4D is bolder. If you’re not sure, our team will guide you. No pressure.

5. Not checking the reg properly

Sounds simple, but people still do it. One wrong letter or number, and the whole plate needs remaking. Always double check the reg before submitting it.

Final tip

If you’re not sure about anything, ask us. We’ve been doing this for years and we’d rather help you get it right than send something back. Better to ask once than fix it twice.
