Hummer Number Plates: Seven Checks Before You Order a Replacement

We make replacement Hummer number plates in one size, 520mm x 111mm, from £25 a pair. Hummers are rare on UK roads, so a few minutes of checking beats a wrong order. 1. Is your Hummer UK-registered, and which Hummer number plates does it need?

We make plates for UK-registered vehicles only. If your Hummer is on UK plates, it takes the same 520mm x 111mm plate as any other car.

• H3: the only Hummer sold officially in right-hand drive. It went on sale here on 1 October 2007 and ran to 2010, when GM closed the Hummer brand.
• H2: sold here in left-hand drive only, built to 2009. A UK car needed single vehicle approval (SVA).
• H1: no normal UK retail launch, so any UK car is a rare one and the paperwork matters.
• GMC Hummer EV: a GMC model, an all-electric pickup and SUV, not officially sold here. A few have arrived as private imports.

2. Does the registration on your Hummer number plates match the V5C?

Copy the registration into our builder from the V5C, not from the old plate, which may already carry a mistake. The builder takes up to 10 characters including spaces. Swapping the letter O for a zero, or the letter I for a 1, is the slip we spot most often before dispatch. In road legal mode you do not need to type the gap, because we apply the legal spacing and font ourselves. The layout in the official plate rules is tighter than it looks:

• Characters are 79mm high and 50mm wide, except the 1 and the I, which are narrower. The gaps between them and the margins are 11mm.
• Seven characters with no 1 or I, plus the wider gap after the age identifier, use 460mm of the 520mm plate. That leaves 60mm spare.

3. Do you need road legal or show Hummer number plates?

Any Hummer used on a public road needs road legal plates. Show plates are for display only.

• Road legal: white at the front, yellow at the back. Our road legal Hummer number plates follow the DVLA's published rules (BS AU 145e), and we check your ID and entitlement documents before we make one.
• Show: your own spacing, a wide range of badges and bottom text of up to 60 characters. Our show plates are never for the road.

4. Will 520mm x 111mm number plates fit the recess on your Hummer?

Measure it before you order, because only your own tape measure can answer this. A US-built car that has been imported and registered here is a UK-registered vehicle, but its factory recess may be a different shape from a UK car's.

1. Measure the recess width and height in millimetres, front and rear separately.
2. Measure the depth at the deepest point. This matters most for a raised finish.
3. Look for any bar, light or fixing that sits in front of the plate area.
4. Compare your numbers with 520mm x 111mm. If either is short, ring us before you order.

Scenario A, a recess that is too small: if your tape shows less than 520mm wide or 111mm high, sort out the mounting before you order. Do not cut a plate down, because the margins are part of the legal layout.

On the H3 the spare wheel is mounted on the tailgate, so look at what surrounds your rear plate before you choose a deep finish.

5. Which finish suits Hummer number plates: Standard, 3D Gel or 4D 5mm?

Dark paint shows raised finishes more clearly, and white or silver paint usually reads cleaner with a flatter plate. These are the three finishes we would look at first:

• Standard, £25 a pair: traditional printed characters and a factory look.
• 3D Gel, £38 a pair: raised black gel resin, a quiet step up from standard.
• 4D 5mm, £50 a pair: 5mm raised gloss acrylic with a stronger shadow, which reads as more premium on darker paint.

6. Does a Hummer EV get green flash number plates?

Yes, if yours is the all-electric GMC Hummer EV and it is on UK plates. It is pure battery electric, so it qualifies for the plain green flash, which is for zero-emission vehicles only. 7. How should you fit and order Hummer number plates?

• Screws are the more reliable fix. Use sticky pads only on a smooth, flat panel in normal weather. A fitting kit can be added to your order, and our fitting guide walks through both methods.
• Clean raised finishes gently, because 4D and gel characters need softer handling than a flat plate.

Which Hummer number plates should you order?

• Scenario B, a black H3 used every day: you have measured and there is room. A road legal 4D 5mm pair at £50 gives the plate presence on dark paint.
• Scenario C, a white H2 you want to look factory: a Standard pair (£25) keeps the car clean and quiet. A 3D Gel pair (£38) adds a little depth.

Q: Can I put 4D number plates on a Hummer?

Yes. 4D 3mm and 4D 5mm both come in road legal mode as well as show mode. The catch is depth. Raised acrylic sits proud of the plate face, so measure the recess and surround first. Dark paint shows the shadow best, so 4D 5mm suits a darker Hummer.

Q: Is a Hummer H2 number plate different from an H3 one?

No. Plate size does not change with the model or steering side. Any UK-registered Hummer takes the same 520mm x 111mm plate from us, front and rear. What differs is the recess on the car, which is why check four matters.

Q: Can I order Hummer number plates before my import has a UK registration?

No. We make plates for UK-registered vehicles only. Wait until the registration has been issued and you have the V5C, then check the characters against it before you pay.

Q: Can I buy just one Hummer number plate?

Yes. Set the other quantity to 0 in the builder. A single Standard plate is £15 and a single 4D 5mm is £26. Buying two or more brings the price of each plate down. All of those sit under £30, so they do not qualify for free Tracked24 delivery.

Q: Can I choose the font or layout of my Hummer number plates?

Not on road legal plates. The spacing and font are applied automatically. The free options are a side badge, such as UK, ENG, CYM, SCO or a plain green flash for zero-emission cars, and a black, red or grey border.

Q: How do I clean raised Hummer number plates?

Gently. Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, and skip abrasive pads. Hard scrubbing round the edges of the raised characters is the thing to avoid, because dirt settles in those gaps. Dry with a clean cloth.

Q: What if my Hummer number plate keeps coming loose?

Switch to screws. Sticky pads grip well only on smooth, flat panels in normal weather. If the plate overhangs the recess at all, measure again before you refit it. A fitting kit can be added to an order, and screws are the more reliable fix.
