Cupra Number Plates: Replacements for the Born, Formentor, Leon, Tavascan and More

Which Cupra do you drive? Electric Born, Tavascan and Raval, or petrol and e-HYBRID models
Cupra sells two kinds of car, and the split changes what goes on the plate. Born, Tavascan and Raval: fully electric. Formentor, Leon and Terramar: petrol, or a plug-in hybrid that Cupra calls e-HYBRID. Leon and Formentor also came with a mild hybrid engine, called eTSI, in the 2024 range. Ateca was petrol, and since it was removed from UK sale in 2026, most owners now have a used one.
Older Cupra number plates: SEAT-badged Leon Cupra and Ibiza Cupra, and the Cupra Ateca
Cupra began as a performance name on SEAT cars in 1996 and became a brand of its own in 2018. So the Leon Cupra 280, 290 and 300 (2014 to 2020) and the earlier Ibiza Cupras carry a SEAT badge, even though everyone calls them Cupras. From 2018, the Ateca was the first car sold under the Cupra name itself, so it wears a Cupra badge.
None of that changes the plate. A SEAT Leon Cupra and a new Cupra Leon both take 520mm x 111mm and follow the same legal rules. A 2014 Leon Cupra is about twelve years old, so its plates are often cracked or faded.

Cupra green flash number plates: the Born, Tavascan and Raval only
A green flash is a badge on a road legal plate that marks a zero-emission car. Only a pure battery electric car qualifies. On a Cupra, that means Born, Tavascan or Raval.
Formentor, Leon and Terramar do not qualify, even when you plug them in. An e-HYBRID is a plug-in hybrid, with a petrol engine as well as a battery. Mild hybrid eTSI cars miss out too. A simple test: if yours has a petrol tank, there is no green flash for it.

Finishes for a performance Cupra: 5D Gel, Black Diamond or 4D 5mm number plates
Cupra leans on performance. A Formentor VZ5 makes 390PS. A Leon is offered with 300PS. The top Ateca had about 296bhp. Owners of cars like these want a plate as sharp as the car.
5D Gel plates are our deepest and glossiest. They have a 5mm profile with a black gel resin topcoat, and cost £64 a pair. Black Diamond has precision diamond-cut detail on each character, which catches the light and gives a dark, faceted look. It is £60 a pair as an introductory price and usually £75. Below those sits 4D 5mm at £50, with 5mm raised gloss acrylic and a strong shadow.
Paint colour matters. Dark paint shows the shadow of a raised character clearly, so the extra depth is easy to see. Pale paint shows less. Going from Standard at £25 to 5D Gel at £64 costs £39 a pair, and on a white car that buys less than you might expect. Deep finishes need room. Before you order 5D Gel, measure the depth of the recess and holder as well as the 520mm x 111mm outline. If the space is tight, 4D 5mm is the safer pick.
We would steer some owners away from the deepest finish. A white or silver Cupra gains less from 5D Gel, and a flat plate is the easiest to wipe clean.
Three Cupra number plate scenarios: a dark Formentor VZ, a used Ateca and a white Born
These are worked examples, not customer stories.
- A Formentor VZ in dark paint, used at weekends. Its owner wants the deepest look. 5D Gel is £64 a pair and 4D 5mm is £50, a £14 difference. First job: measure the room behind the front plate. Plenty, 5D Gel. Tight, 4D 5mm.
- A 2019 Ateca with a cracked rear plate after a parking knock. Spending little matters here. A single Standard plate is £15, which sits under our £30 free delivery line. A 3D Gel pair at £38 clears it and gives matching front and rear plates. That is the pair to take.
- A white Born with a green flash. Raised gloss on white paint shows less of its shadow, so a Standard pair is a sensible pick. Build a road legal plate, pick the green flash and check the preview.
Fitting Cupra number plates: screws first, and measure the holder before you remove it
Screws are the more reliable fix. Sticky pads work best on a smooth, flat panel in normal weather, and a fitting kit can be added to your order. Our fitting guide walks through both methods.

Looking after raised Cupra number plates, and the slips we catch before dispatch
Raised 4D and gel finishes need gentler cleaning than a flat plate. Use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a little car shampoo, and wipe lightly. Our guide on how to clean raised plates covers the rest.
Most mistakes happen before we make the plate. Letter O looks like number 0, and letter I looks like number 1. Read your V5C, then read the registration you typed, and only then pay. We catch many of these slips before dispatch, but the final check is yours.
When will my Cupra number plates reach me, and what does delivery cost?
We send Cupra number plates across the UK by Tracked24, free on orders over £30. Every pair except the Standard pair at £25 clears that line, and a single plate at £15 or £20 does not. Order before 2pm and most plates are dispatched the same day.
Which Cupra number plates should you order? Our pick for each generation
For a Born or Raval, choose Standard or 3D Gel, with a green flash if you like. For a Tavascan, 4D 5mm. For a Formentor or Leon you care about, 5D Gel or Black Diamond if the recess allows, otherwise 4D 5mm. A used Ateca or older SEAT-badged Cupra is fine with 3D Gel.
Verdict: measure first, then decide. If your recess has room and your paint is dark, 4D 5mm is a sensible raised finish, and 5D Gel is worth the extra £14 only if you want the deepest look. If the car is pale or elderly, spend less. On a Cupra, a green flash is for the Born, Tavascan and Raval only.

Q: Are 4D number plates legal on a Cupra?
They can be, if the plate meets the rules. Our road legal plates are made to the DVLA's published rules (BS AU 145e), and we check ID and entitlement documents before we make one. Show mode plates are display only. The official guidance on displaying number plates explains the rules.
Q: Does a Cupra Formentor e-HYBRID get a green number plate?
No. An e-HYBRID is a plug-in hybrid, and a green flash is only for cars that are pure battery electric. That goes for the Leon e-HYBRID, the Terramar and the mild hybrid eTSI models too. Only the Born, Tavascan and Raval qualify.
Q: Do I need a green flash on my Cupra Born?
No, it is optional. In our builder it is one badge choice among several, next to having no badge. A Born is fully electric, so it qualifies. If you add one, use road legal mode and check the live preview before you pay.
