Need a replacement plate for your Polestar? We build road legal plates in all seven styles for the current UK range, Polestar 2, Polestar 3 and Polestar 4, to the mandatory BS AU 145e standard. Every Polestar sold today is fully electric, so unlike most manufacturers we deal with, the green flash option applies across the whole line-up, not just one model out of several.
Which Polestar models we cover
We supply plates for the full current UK range: Polestar 2, the fastback saloon and the model most owners bring to us, Polestar 3, the mid-size SUV, and Polestar 4, the coupe SUV with the distinctive rear-light bar in place of a traditional rear window. All three share Polestar's Scandinavian design language, a restrained treatment with minimal brightwork and no awkward mounting recess. Fitment is straightforward whichever one you drive, and whether your plate ends up drilled or adhesive-mounted depends on how your car was set up, not the model.
Fitting a replacement plate on a Polestar, step by step
- Check how your current plate is fitted, screw heads or adhesive pad residue on the back.
- If screwed on, note the screw positions, or ask us not to pre-drill so you can position the holes yourself. UK plate screws are typically 5mm or 6mm self-tappers, but confirm against what is fitted.
- If adhesive-mounted, use fresh exterior-grade pads when refitting, since adhesive strength drops once it has been through weather cycles.
- Our plates arrive ready for either approach. We do not pre-drill as standard, so the holes go exactly where your car needs them.
The EV green flash option for Polestar owners
The green flash is a small green rectangle on the left-hand side of a number plate, introduced to help identify genuinely zero-emission vehicles at a glance. It is optional and has no bearing on whether the plate meets BS AU 145e, since it is simply a marked area within an otherwise compliant design.
This is where Polestar stands apart from most brands we cover. With manufacturers selling a mix of petrol, hybrid and electric models, we usually have to explain that only certain variants qualify, and it is easy to order the flash by mistake on a plug-in hybrid that does not qualify. That does not apply here. Every current Polestar, the 2, the 3 and the 4, is fully electric with no petrol or hybrid version on sale, so the green flash is straightforward for any Polestar owner, not something to check model by model.
Choosing it comes down to preference. Some like the visual signal that the car is zero-emission, others prefer the plate as standard, and either is valid since it does not change the plate's legality. Worth being clear about: the flash was designed with local low-emission and reduced-charge schemes in mind, but recognition varies by council, and some rely on automatic number plate recognition rather than the flash itself. Check with your own local authority rather than assuming a saving. It can be added to any of our seven styles at checkout.
Which finish suits which Polestar
Polestar's understated surfacing and minimal badging tend to reward a finish that matches that restraint. A Standard or 3D Gel plate keeps the factory look intact and suits the Polestar 2 particularly well, where the brand's minimalism is most pronounced. That said, plenty of owners want more visual depth, and there is nothing wrong with that on any Polestar. 4D and 5D Gel finishes add genuine dimension and catch light differently, which some feel suits the larger presence of the 3 and 4 better than the smaller 2. Black Diamond has also become popular on the 3 and 4, where the darker, faceted finish sits well against a bigger, more upright front end. None of this is a rule, just where most owners land when deciding.
Caring for your plate on a Polestar
A raised finish, whether 3D Gel, 4D or 5D Gel, sits slightly proud of a flat Standard plate, so it picks up more contact from stiff brushes in automated car washes. A touchless or soft-cloth setting is kinder to it, or stick with Standard or 3D Gel if you would rather not think about it. For everyday cleaning, a soft cloth and ordinary car shampoo by hand is the safest option across all seven styles.
Common mistakes Polestar owners make when ordering a replacement plate
- Assuming the green flash is included by default, rather than something added deliberately at checkout.
- Not checking whether the current plate is drilled or adhesive-mounted before ordering, which can mean fitting problems on arrival.
- Expecting a guaranteed local authority discount from the green flash without checking the scheme with the council first.
Road legal compliance
BS AU 145e is the mandatory British Standard for number plates, in force since 1 September 2021. It sets out character height (79mm), character width (50mm, except the numeral 1 and letter I), stroke width (14mm), spacing between characters (11mm), the 33mm gap before the age identifier, margins (11mm), and the retroreflective background, white at the front and yellow at the rear, with single solid black characters. Raised finishes such as gel, 4D or diamond-cut are dimensional rather than colour effects, so they remain within these rules, and every plate we supply carries our name and postcode, as required.
A plate built correctly to BS AU 145e, with the right spacing, font and reflectivity, is also what keeps it reliably readable by ANPR cameras.
We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.
