Replacement Number Plate for Audi

Legal & Show Plates makes road legal replacement number plates for any Audi model, from the A1 through to the R8, built to the BS AU 145e standard that has applied to every UK plate since 1 September 2021. All seven of our plate styles are available for Audi fitment, in the single 520mm x 111mm size used for both the front and rear plate.

Which Audi models we cover

We supply plates for the full current and recent Audi range, grouped below because fitment isn't identical across the line-up.

Compact range: A1, A3. Standard front bumper recess, drilled for two screws in most trims, generous enough that any of the seven finishes sits flush without trimming.

Saloon and Avant: A4, A5, A6, A7, A8. Audi's most conventional mounting arrangement. The recess is wide and deep, so a 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond plate with more relief doesn't catch on the bumper edge. Most freedom here to choose a finish on looks alone.

Q-range SUVs: Q2, Q3, Q4 e-tron, Q5, Q6 e-tron, Q7, Q8. Upright mounting, easy access, and enough clearance for a raised finish to sit proud. The Q2's front end is noticeably more compact than the Q7 or Q8's, so don't assume every SUV in this group behaves the same.

Electric range: e-tron, e-tron GT (plus the Q4 and Q6 e-tron above). Fitment follows the same pattern as their conventional counterparts, an e-tron mounts like an A6. If fitting a green flash EV plate, check your design against gov.uk's rules first.

Performance: TT, R8, and RS/S variants. The TT and R8 are the pair to plan around, both with a smaller, angled front recess styled tighter into the bumper. A standard-cut plate can sit slightly proud on these two, particularly with a deeper finish. We can trim to fit on request.

Fitting a replacement plate on an Audi, step by step

Before you order, check how your current plate is fixed, drilled with two screws, or held with adhesive pads. Ordering the wrong preparation means redrilling once the new plate arrives.

Most Audis use standard UK screw sizes, so a drilled plate is usually a straight swap through the same holes. The TT and R8 are the exception, their front bumper is a more finished, painted panel with less depth behind the recess. Adhesive pads suit these two better, since drilling into a shallower panel risks hitting something you shouldn't, or leaving screw heads visible.

One caution worth repeating: don't mount a raised finish, like 5D Gel or Black Diamond, flush against the TT or R8's tighter recess without checking clearance. On wider-recessed models this isn't an issue, but on these two it's easy to miss until fitted.

Which finish suits which Audi

This is genuine taste, not a rule, but here's what tends to work well against Audi's design language. RS and S variants, with their more aggressive styling and larger calipers and grilles, often carry a deeper finish well, 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond adds presence matching the car's assertive detailing.

A-range saloons and Q-range SUVs tend to suit the more restrained Standard or 3D Gel finish. Audi's design language leans understated even on higher trims, and a lower-relief plate often reads as more deliberately chosen.

e-tron, Q4 e-tron and Q6 e-tron owners often lean toward the same clean look, in keeping with the calmer front-end treatment on Audi's electric models. This is a preference, not a fitment restriction, any of the seven styles physically fits an e-tron.

Caring for your plate on an Audi

RS and S models are more likely to see regular professional detailing, and high-pressure water close up can catch under a raised gel dome's edge if the detailer isn't expecting it. Worth a word with whoever washes the car, or a flatter finish like Standard or 4D 3mm if it's detailed weekly.

If you've had a TT or R8 plate trimmed to fit, avoid abrasive pads or stiff brushes right at the trimmed edge, a soft cloth and car shampoo is enough generally, but a trimmed edge is where rough handling shows first.

Common mistakes Audi owners make when ordering a replacement plate

Not checking the TT or R8's smaller recess before ordering a deep raised finish, then finding it sits proud once fitted. Mention it at order time and we'll trim to fit.

Assuming every Q-range SUV mounts identically. The Q2's compact front is genuinely different from the Q7 or Q8's larger, more upright front end.

Not confirming drilled versus adhesive before ordering. If you're not certain how your current plate is fixed, check before you order rather than guessing.

Road legal compliance

A factory-fitted Audi plate is normally already compliant with BS AU 145e, so a replacement should match that specification exactly. BS AU 145e sets out 79mm character height, 50mm character width (except 1 and I), 14mm stroke width, 11mm spacing between characters, a 33mm age-identifier gap, and 11mm margins, on a white retroreflective background at the front and yellow at the rear, in single solid black characters. A plate built correctly to this spec, with the right spacing, font and reflectivity, is also what keeps it machine-readable by ANPR cameras. Every plate carries our supplier name and postcode. We are not a DVLA registered supplier, our plates are built to DVLA's published rules for plate specification.

FAQs about Replacement Number Plate for Audi

1. Are the TT and R8's front plates harder to fit than other Audis?

Not harder, just tighter. Both have a smaller, angled front recess, so a standard-cut plate can sit slightly proud. We can trim to fit on request. Most owners fit these themselves using the same screw or adhesive method as the original plate.

2. Should I drill or use adhesive pads on my Audi?

Depends on the model and how your current plate is fixed. Most Audis take a drilled fit through the original holes. The TT and R8 often suit adhesive pads, their front panel is shallower.

3. Is a replacement Audi plate automatically road legal?

Only if made to BS AU 145e spec, correct size, spacing, colour and supplier marking. Compliance depends on the plate, not the vehicle it's going on.

4. Can I get a raised finish like 5D Gel on a Q2 as well as a Q7?

Yes, all seven styles fit both. The Q2's front end is more compact, so there's less clearance, but it doesn't rule out a raised finish.

5. Do EV Audis like the e-tron need a different plate?

Only if fitting a green flash to show the vehicle is electric. Check your design against gov.uk's current rules first.

6. How quickly will my Audi plate arrive?

Same-day dispatch before 2pm, then 1 to 3 working days by Royal Mail, or the tracked 24 hour option.
