Replacement Number Plate for Volvo

Every Volvo, from the S60 saloon to the electric EX90, takes a single plate size: 520mm x 111mm, front and rear. There's no short or square option, so ordering is straightforward. The two things worth knowing before you buy are which of our seven finishes suits Volvo's design language, and, on the newer models, whether the front plate area sits near a sensor housing.

Which Volvo models we cover

We supply replacement plates for every Volvo currently sold in the UK: the S60 and S90 saloons, the V60 and V90 estates, the XC40, XC60 and XC90 SUVs, and the fully electric EX30 and EX90.

The S-range saloons, V-range estates and XC-range SUVs all have a conventional plate recess front and rear, no adapters, no trimming, no fitment issues to flag.

Where it's worth pausing is on the newer cars, particularly XC60, XC90, and the electric EX30 and EX90. Volvo has been fitting more sensor equipment behind the front grille on recent models, parking sensors, adaptive cruise radar, and on some cars that sits close to the plate mounting area. The plate will still go on, but check it and any fixing screws clear the sensor window before you commit, rather than assuming it won't matter.

Fitting a replacement plate on a Volvo, step by step

  1. Check how the current plate is fixed and match the screw size. Most Volvos leave the factory with a standard 4mm or 5mm self-tapper into pre-threaded holes. If the holes are stripped, measure the old screws first rather than forcing new ones in.

  2. Check sensor clearance on newer models. On XC60, XC90, EX30 and EX90, look behind the grille and make sure the plate and screw heads clear the sensor window.

  3. Decide between drilled and adhesive fitting. Drilling and screwing is more secure and what most Volvo owners use. Adhesive pads work if you'd rather not drill, but need a clean, dry surface and a reasonable temperature to bond, so are less reliable in a cold garage in January.

  4. Sit the plate square. Position it loosely, check it's level and centred, then tighten or press it home.

Which finish suits which Volvo

Volvo's design language is deliberately restrained, Scandinavian, understated, not much chrome or fuss, and that tends to suit a Standard plate or our 3D Gel finish, both of which read as clean and factory-correct. If you drive an S60, V60 or XC40 and want the plate to look right rather than loud, one of those two is the natural fit.

Taste doesn't stop at the badge, though. Owners at the top of the range, XC90 and EX90 in particular, sometimes choose a deeper 4D finish for extra presence. It's a style choice, not a fitment or legality issue: every one of our seven finishes meets the same BS AU 145e specification.

The EV green flash option for electric Volvos

The green flash, a small green rectangle on the left of the plate, is only for vehicles that produce zero emissions at the tailpipe. In Volvo's range, that means the EX30 and EX90 are eligible.

It doesn't extend to Volvo's Recharge plug-in hybrid variants, available on certain S60, V60, XC60 and XC90 trims. Those cars still carry a combustion engine, so despite the "Recharge" badge, they don't qualify.

Whether the flash gets you anything practical, cheaper parking, low-emission zone access, varies by council, so check locally rather than assume a saving. EX30 and EX90 owners can add it at the plate builder stage.

Caring for your plate on a Volvo

Wash it with the same car shampoo you use on the paintwork, not anything abrasive, and keep a jet wash nozzle back from the surface on a raised 4D or 5D Gel finish, since concentrated pressure at close range can work at the edges of the digits over time. If the fixing screws work loose after a few months of motorway miles, snug them back up before the plate rattles.

Common mistakes Volvo owners make when ordering a replacement plate

  • Assuming there's a smaller size for a Volvo. There isn't, every model uses the same 520mm x 111mm plate.
  • Skipping the sensor check on an XC60, XC90, EX30 or EX90. This is how people end up needing a plate repositioned.
  • Requesting the green flash on a Recharge plug-in hybrid. It's only for the fully electric EX30 and EX90.

Road legal compliance

BS AU 145e is the standard applied to every UK number plate since 1 September 2021, and it's what all seven of our finishes are built to: 79mm character height, 50mm width (except the numeral 1 and letter I), 14mm stroke width, 11mm spacing, a 33mm gap before the age identifier, and 11mm margins, on a white retroreflective background at the front and yellow at the rear, in solid black characters only. A raised or gel finish changes the texture and depth of the characters, not their colour or spacing, so it stays within the standard. Getting these dimensions right also keeps a plate readable by ANPR cameras, since correct spacing, font and reflectivity are what the recognition software relies on.

We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e. Every plate we dispatch carries our supplier name and postcode, as the standard requires.

FAQs about Replacement Number Plate for Volvo

1. Do all Volvo models use the same plate size?

Yes. Every current Volvo, from the S60 saloon to the EX90, takes the standard 520mm x 111mm plate front and rear. There's no short or square version. View our full Standard plate options.

2. Will a 4D or 5D Gel plate fit my Volvo without issue?

Physically, yes, they share the same dimensions as our Standard plate. On XC60, XC90, EX30 and EX90 check the plate and screws sit clear of any sensor housing before fitting. Explore our 4D plates and 5D Gel options.

3. Can I get the green flash on my Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid?

No. The green flash is only for genuinely zero-emission vehicles, which in Volvo's range means the EX30 and EX90. Recharge plug-in hybrids still carry a combustion engine. Learn more about green flash eligibility.

4. Which finish looks best on a Volvo?

Down to taste. Standard or 3D Gel suits Volvo's understated styling, while XC90 and EX90 owners more often choose a deeper 4D finish for extra presence. All seven finishes are equally road legal.

5. How quickly will my replacement Volvo plate arrive?

Order before 2pm and we dispatch the same day via Royal Mail, tracked delivery in 1 to 3 working days. Contact us if you need expedited shipping.
