Replacement Number Plate for Renault

If you need a replacement number plate for a Renault, every plate we make is one size, 520mm x 111mm, front and rear. That covers the current range, from the electric Twingo and Renault 5 to the Rafale flagship SUV, plus older models like the Zoe and Kadjar. Choose from seven finishes, £25 Standard to £64 5D Gel, built to BS AU 145e and dispatched same day if ordered before 2pm.

Which Renault models we cover

Renault's current line-up splits into groups. At the electric end sit the Twingo, Renault 5 and Renault 4, all E-Tech Electric only, no petrol version is currently sold. The Clio and Captur remain hybrid or petrol, and the Arkana sits alongside them as a hybrid coupe-SUV, relaunched in the UK after an earlier generation was discontinued. For SUVs there's the Symbioz (hybrid and mild hybrid), the larger Austral (hybrid), and the Rafale, Renault's plug-in hybrid flagship. The Megane and Scenic are also E-Tech Electric in their current generation, more on that below.

We also get orders for models Renault no longer sells new. The Zoe was discontinued in the UK in 2024, replaced in spirit by the Renault 5, but plenty are still on the road. The Kadjar was discontinued too, superseded by the Symbioz and Austral, and remains common. Whatever the age of the car, you're getting a standard 520mm x 111mm plate made to your registration.

Fitting a replacement plate on a Renault, step by step

We haven't found a documented Renault-specific fitting quirk worth stating as fact, and we'd rather say that plainly than invent one. Standard UK fitting practice applies across the range, only the holder shape varies a little between an older Clio and a newer Austral or Rafale.

  1. Confirm your current plate is the standard 520mm x 111mm size, true across every Renault, current or discontinued.
  2. Note the screw hole or clip positions before removing the old plate.
  3. Remove the old plate carefully, keeping any fixings you plan to reuse.
  4. Offer the new plate up before fixing anything, to check the holes line up.
  5. Fix it using the same method as before, screws or adhesive pads, so it sits flat with nothing overlapping the characters.

Which finish suits which Renault

The Renault 5 and Renault 4 lean on a retro design language, deliberately clean and pared back, and owners often pick a finish that echoes that rather than fights it, Standard, 3D Gel or Black Diamond suit the look better than a heavily raised plate. The Twingo follows the same logic. The Rafale and Austral are bigger, pricier, more assertive, and owners of those two more often want real presence, 4D 5mm, 4D Gel or 5D Gel, where raised characters suit a flagship SUV. Clio, Captur and Arkana owners sit in the middle. None of this affects legality, every finish is built to the same BS AU 145e spec, it's about how the plate reads on the car.

The EV green flash option for electric Renaults

A green flash is a small green rectangle on the left of the plate, for genuinely zero-emission vehicles only, never hybrids or plug-in hybrids. On the Renault range that's the Twingo, Renault 5, Renault 4, Megane and Scenic, all in their E-Tech Electric form.

Worth flagging: Megane and Scenic both existed for years as petrol and diesel models before becoming EV-only nameplates. An older Megane or Scenic is very unlikely to be electric, only the current generation is, so the badge alone isn't proof of eligibility. Any local benefit from a green flash, such as reduced parking or low-emission zone charges, varies by council, so check locally rather than assume it applies to you.

Caring for your plate on a Renault

A clean plate reads correctly to ANPR cameras and simply looks better, which matters more on raised finishes where dirt collects around the characters. A soft cloth or sponge with warm water and a plain car shampoo is enough, rinsed rather than wiped dry, to avoid scratching a gloss or gel surface. Go easy on the raised 3D, 4D and 5D finishes especially, the characters sit slightly proud and mark more easily than a flat Standard plate. Regular jet washing at a sensible distance is fine.

Common mistakes owners make when ordering a Replacement Number Plate for Renault

  • Assuming an older Megane or Scenic qualifies for a green flash because the current generation is now electric. Only the current E-Tech Electric versions are genuinely zero-emission.
  • Looking for a smaller plate for the Twingo, Renault 5 or Renault 4. We only make one size, 520mm x 111mm, across the whole range.
  • Assuming a raised finish like 4D or 5D Gel is less road legal than Standard. The finish is dimensional, not a colour effect.
  • Expecting a fitting kit to be included, when only the plate itself is supplied.

Road legal compliance

Every plate follows BS AU 145e, the UK standard since September 2021: 79mm character height, 50mm character width except for the numeral 1 and letter I, 14mm stroke width, 11mm spacing, a 33mm gap before the age identifier, and 11mm margins. Backgrounds are white retroreflective at the front and yellow at the rear, single solid black characters only, no shadow or outline effects. Raised and gel finishes are dimensional, not a colour effect, so they remain compliant. The plate carries our name and postcode as supplier. Built correctly to this spec, with the right spacing, font and reflectivity, a plate also stays reliably machine-readable by ANPR cameras.

We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.
