Replacement Number Plate for Kia

Every replacement plate we make comes in one size only, 520mm x 111mm, front and rear. That fits the current range from Picanto to EV9, and the older Ceed, Rio, Soul and Stinger too. Choose from seven finishes, from a £25 Standard plate to a £64 5D Gel, all built to BS AU 145e and dispatched the same day if ordered before 2pm.

Which Kia models we cover

Kia's current UK line-up spans a wide spread of body styles, but every one takes the same 520mm x 111mm plate. The Picanto is Kia's city car, and owners replacing a plate on one usually want something clean and unfussy. The Stonic, XCeed and K4 sit in the crossover and family hatch space, the K4 having replaced the Ceed in the UK. For SUVs there's the Sportage and Sorento, both hybrid or plug-in hybrid, plus the Niro, covered separately below. At the top sit the fully electric models: EV3, EV4, EV5, EV6 and EV9.

We also see plenty of orders for models Kia no longer sells new. The Ceed and Proceed were replaced by the K4 but remain common on the road. The Rio was dropped from around 2024, the Soul isn't sold new any more, and the Stinger was discontinued globally. None of that changes your order, it's still a standard 520mm x 111mm plate, made to your registration.

Fitting a replacement plate on a Kia, step by step

We haven't found a documented Kia-specific fitting quirk worth stating as fact, and we'd rather say so than invent one. Holder shape and screw positions do vary a little between an older Rio and a new EV6, simply because the range spans small city cars to large SUVs. The plate itself never changes size, only the surround it sits in.

  1. Check your current plate for existing screw hole positions.
  2. No old plate to reference? Check the bumper or bootlid holder, that's where variation shows up.
  3. Remove the old plate, keeping any clips you plan to reuse.
  4. Offer the new plate up before fixing, to confirm the holes line up.
  5. Fix with appropriate screws or clips, plate flat, characters uncovered.
  6. Check it against BS AU 145e spacing rules below, especially on a self-fit job.

Which finish suits which Kia

There's no rule saying a particular Kia needs a particular finish, but there are patterns. EV6 and EV9 buyers, at the flagship end of the range, tend to want more presence: 4D Gel, 5D Gel or Black Diamond, where raised, reflective characters suit a car already positioned as premium. Picanto and Stonic owners more often want a factory-correct look, so Standard or 3D Gel are popular. XCeed and K4 owners are a fairly even mix. None of this affects legality, every finish meets the same BS AU 145e spec.

The EV green flash option for electric Kias

A green flash is a small green rectangle on the left of the plate, for genuinely zero-emission vehicles. On the Kia range that's the EV3, EV4, EV5, EV6 and EV9, plus specifically the Niro EV.

Here's the one thing worth flagging clearly, because it trips people up: Kia sells the Niro as three powertrains, a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and a separate Niro EV. Only the Niro EV is genuinely zero-emission and eligible for the green flash. A Niro Hybrid or PHEV takes the same plate at the same price, but doesn't qualify. The Sportage and Sorento have the same issue in reverse: both are hybrid or plug-in hybrid only in the UK, so a green flash isn't appropriate on either.

Any local benefit, such as reduced parking or low-emission zone charges, varies by council, so check locally rather than assume it applies where you are.

Caring for your plate on a Replacement Number Plate for Kia

A clean plate reads correctly to ANPR cameras and simply looks better, which matters more on raised finishes where dirt sits in the recesses. Warm water, a plain car shampoo and a soft cloth is enough, rinsed rather than wiped dry when there's grit about. Avoid anything abrasive on the 3D, 4D and 5D finishes especially, since the raised character marks more easily than a flat Standard plate.

Common mistakes Kia owners make when ordering a replacement plate

  • Assuming any Niro qualifies for a green flash. Only the Niro EV does, not the Hybrid or PHEV.
  • Looking for a short or square plate for a smaller Kia like the Picanto. We only make one size, 520mm x 111mm.
  • Assuming a raised finish like 4D or 5D Gel is less road legal than Standard. The finish is dimensional, not colour, so compliance isn't affected.
  • Ordering without double-checking the registration entered.
  • Expecting a fitting bracket to be included, when only the plate is supplied.

Road legal compliance

Every plate we make follows BS AU 145e, the UK standard in force since September 2021: 79mm character height, 50mm character width except for the numeral 1 and letter I, 14mm stroke width, 11mm spacing between characters, a 33mm gap before the age identifier, and 11mm margins. Backgrounds are white retroreflective at the front and yellow at the rear, single solid black characters only, and the plate carries our name and postcode as supplier. A plate built correctly to BS AU 145e, with the right spacing, font and reflectivity, is also what keeps it reliably readable by ANPR cameras.

We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.

FAQs about Replacement Number Plate for Kia

Q: Does a raised 4D or 5D plate fit my Kia the same as a Standard plate?

Yes. Every finish is made at the same 520mm x 111mm size, so it fits wherever your current plate fits.

Q: Is my Niro eligible for the green flash?

Only if it's the Niro EV. The Niro Hybrid and Niro PHEV aren't fully electric, so they don't qualify.

Q: Are 4D and 5D Gel plates legal on a Kia?

Yes, provided they're built to BS AU 145e. The raised finish is dimensional depth, not colour, so compliance isn't affected.

Q: Do you offer a smaller plate size for the Picanto?

No, we only make one size, 520mm x 111mm, for every Kia model and finish.

Q: Can I get a green flash on a Sportage or Sorento?

No. Both are hybrid or plug-in hybrid only in the UK, with no fully electric version.

Q: How quickly will my Kia plate arrive?

Order before 2pm and it's dispatched the same day via Royal Mail, tracked, arriving in 1 to 3 working days.
