Replacement Number Plate for BMW

Need a replacement plate for a BMW? We make road legal number plates built to BS AU 145e for every BMW model, from the 1 Series to the X7 and the electric i4, iX, iX1 and iX3, in all seven finishes at the single UK-standard size, 520mm x 111mm.

Which BMW models we cover

We supply plates for the full BMW range, and fitment varies enough between the groups that it is worth knowing which one your car falls into before you order.

Compact, saloon and Touring range (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Series). A conventional, generous recess throughout, so a Standard, 3D Gel, 4D or Black Diamond plate all sit flush without adjustment.

Luxury range (7 Series, 8 Series) and X-range SUVs (X1 to X7). Larger panels and a deep, upright recess with plenty of clearance, so domed finishes such as 4D Gel and 5D Gel suit these cars well.

Roadster (Z4). A tighter, lower front panel than the saloons. Double-check depth clearance before choosing a heavily domed finish.

M-performance range (M2, M3, M4, M5). M2, M3 and M4 sit with a noticeably tighter front recess around the kidney grille surround than the standard 3 and 4 Series. The extra depth of a 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond finish sometimes needs more clearance than a standard bumper allows, so check your model and any aftermarket grille or splitter before ordering a raised finish.

Electric range (i4, iX, iX1, iX3). The closed-off, body-coloured front panel on BMW's electric models has a shallower recess than the equivalent SUV or saloon. A flatter finish sits more cleanly here.

Fitting a replacement plate on a BMW, step by step

  1. Check how your current plate is fixed. Most factory BMW plates are drilled and screwed, though some, particularly on the electric range and M-performance models, use adhesive pads to keep the front panel clean.
  2. If drilled, standard UK screw fixings (usually 5mm or 6mm plate screws) match the existing holes on nearly every BMW model.
  3. On a kidney grille surround or aftermarket splitter, common on M2, M3, M4 and Z4 models, adhesive mounting is often more practical, since it avoids drilling into a painted or textured surround.
  4. Before fitting a 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond finish on an M-performance model, offer the plate up to the recess first. The raised profile needs more depth than a Standard or 3D Gel plate, and this is tighter on some grille surrounds than on a standard bumper.
  5. Clean the recess and check the plate sits flush, square and visible before fixing.

Which finish suits which BMW

This is genuine personal taste, not a fixed rule, but there are patterns worth knowing. M-performance and coupe models (M2, M3, M4, Z4) are often chosen with the deeper 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond finishes, where raised, glossy black lettering suits the more aggressive styling. Everyday 1, 2 and 3 Series and X1/X3 owners more often go for the Standard or 3D Gel finish, a clean, factory-style look. i4, iX, iX1 and iX3 owners frequently lean the same way, which suits BMW's minimal electric design language, though again, this is preference, not compliance.

The EV green flash option for electric BMWs

The i4, iX, iX1 and iX3 are BMW's genuinely zero-emission models, so owners of those cars may be eligible to order the green flash option alongside their plate. This does not apply to the plug-in hybrid 330e or 530e range, since a hybrid is not zero-emission even where it can run on electric power for part of a journey. The green flash is optional, not a legal requirement, and is commonly understood to help with recognition under some local low-emission schemes. This varies by council, so check locally rather than assuming a specific saving before ordering.

Caring for your plate on a BMW

M-performance models are frequently kept in show condition and see regular detailing, and a close-range, high-pressure jet wash can catch the edge of a raised gel dome. If your BMW is detailed regularly, mention the finish to whoever washes it, or choose a flatter Standard or 3D Gel finish if that is a concern. X-range SUVs used off-road or in muddier conditions tend to be easier to keep clean with a flatter finish too, simply because there is less raised surface for grit to sit against. A soft cloth and standard car shampoo suits all our finishes; avoid abrasive pads on any domed or gel plate.

Common mistakes BMW owners make when ordering a replacement plate

  • Ordering a deep 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond finish for an M2, M3 or M4 without checking clearance around the kidney grille surround first.

  • Assuming the iX, because it is SUV-shaped, fits the same way as an X5 or X7, when its front panel design is different.

  • Not confirming whether the existing plate is drilled or adhesive-fixed before ordering.

  • Assuming a hybrid BMW such as the 330e or 530e qualifies for the green flash option. It does not.

Road legal compliance

Every plate we supply is built to BS AU 145e, the mandatory UK standard since 1 September 2021: 79mm character height, 50mm width (except the figure 1 and letter I), 14mm stroke, 11mm character spacing, a 33mm age-identifier gap, 11mm margins, solid black characters on a white retroreflective background at the front and yellow at the rear, plus our supplier name and postcode on the plate. A plate built correctly to this standard, with the right spacing, font and reflectivity, is also what keeps it machine-readable by ANPR cameras. A factory-fitted BMW plate is normally already compliant, so a replacement should match that spec exactly. We are not a DVLA registered supplier; our plates are built to DVLA's published rules.

FAQs about Replacement Number Plate for BMW

1. Will a replacement plate fit my BMW without drilling new holes?

Usually, provided you order the same fixing type as your existing plate. Check whether it is drilled or adhesive-fixed before ordering, particularly on M-performance and electric models, where adhesive fitting is common.

2. Do 4D or Black Diamond plates fit properly on M2, M3 and M4 models?

Usually, but the kidney grille surround recess on these models is tighter than a standard 3 or 4 Series, so check clearance before choosing a deep, raised finish. A Standard or 3D Gel plate avoids this entirely. View our full range of 4D plates for more options.

3. Is my BMW i4, iX, iX1 or iX3 eligible for a green flash plate?

Yes, these are BMW's genuinely zero-emission models. Plug-in hybrids such as the 330e and 530e are not eligible. Check your eligibility and explore custom number plate options.

4. Are all seven of your finishes road legal on a BMW?

Yes. Every finish, from Standard through to Black Diamond, is built to BS AU 145e and is road legal, provided it is fitted correctly and kept clean and visible.

5. Can I order just one plate if I only need to replace the front or rear?

Yes, plates are priced and sold individually, so you can order a single replacement rather than a matching pair.
