What To Do If Your Number Plate Falls Off or Gets Damaged
This happens more than you’d think. You hit a pothole, someone nudges you in the car park, or the glue just gives up. One of your plates goes missing or ends up cracked. Now what?
Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it either
If your plate’s missing or unreadable, you can get stopped. Most police will give you a warning or fine. If you're unlucky, it could even affect your insurance if you're in an accident.
We’ve had people ring us saying they drove for weeks with no front plate and “didn’t think it mattered.” It does.
First, check your other plate
If one’s gone, the other might be loose too. Give it a wobble and see if it’s still properly fixed.
Get a replacement fast
You’ll need a replacement made to match your reg exactly. No need to wait days either. At Legal Show Plates, we dispatch same day if you order early.
You’ll need to upload ID and a proof of ownership. It’s a DVLA thing, not our rule.
What about the old fixings?
Don’t just stick the new one over the remains of the old plate. Remove all broken bits and clean the surface. If you want a secure fit, use our plate fitting kit. It includes sticky pads and screws.
Can I drive without it while I wait?
Technically no. But if you’ve already ordered and keep the confirmation handy, some officers might be understanding. Still, best to avoid it. Ask a mate for a lift or wait till it arrives.
We’ve all been there
A few of us have had plates ripped off in car washes or loosened after a freezing night. It’s not rare. But once you sort it, you’re good again.
