Do Number Plates Expire or Need Replacing Over Time?
We’ve had loads of customers ask this, do plates actually expire? Do you have to change them after a certain number of years? The answer is no, number plates don’t have a set expiry date. But that doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. There are reasons you might need to replace them.
When do plates need replacing?
If your plate is still in good condition, readable, and meets legal standards, you can keep using it. There’s no rule that says a plate must be changed every few years. But you’ll need to replace it if:
- The letters have faded or worn off
- It’s cracked, bent, or damaged
- The fixings have come loose
- It's failed an MOT due to visibility issues
- The reflective surface is peeling or dull
Any of these can make your plate illegal. If it’s hard to read or not reflective enough, police and cameras won’t be able to pick it up, and that’s where fines come in.
What the DVLA says
According to the DVLA, number plates must meet the British Standard (currently BS AU 145e). That covers reflectivity, strength, layout, and visibility. If your plate doesn’t meet that anymore, it’s time for a new one.
We’ve had people come to us with plates they’ve had on their car for over 10 years. Sometimes they’re fine. Other times, they’ve cracked from years of sun and winter grit. If you’re in doubt, swap it out.
MOT testers will spot it
Even if you think your plate looks alright, an MOT tester might see something else. They check for legibility and condition. If the plate is too worn, it's a fail.
We’ve heard stories where people failed MOTs because of a small chip or faded characters. Best to deal with it before the test.
Our advice
Check your plates now and then. Wipe them clean, look for cracks or faded bits. If they don’t look sharp anymore, get them replaced. It's cheap and easy compared to the hassle of fines or failed MOTs.
