Can I Use Black and Silver Number Plates on My Car?
We get asked this a lot, usually by owners of vintage or classic vehicles who love the old-school look. Black and silver plates definitely turn heads, but they’re not for everyone. Let’s break down when you can and can’t use them legally.
Who can legally use black and silver plates?
Only vehicles registered before 1 January 1980 can display black and silver number plates. That rule was brought in to keep things authentic for vintage cars, and the DVLA is pretty strict about it.
If your car was built before 1980 but registered later, it might not qualify unless it’s officially classed as a historic vehicle by the DVLA.
Real example
We had a customer with a restored 1978 MG asking for black and silver plates. Since the car was correctly registered as historic, it was perfectly fine. Another customer had a 1982 model, and although it looked the part, we had to let them know it wouldn’t be road legal with those plates.
What if I use them on a newer car?
You risk getting pulled over, fined, and failing your MOT. ANPR cameras and police are trained to spot incorrect plate types. Even if your car is a vintage model but not properly registered as historic, it still has to use the standard white and yellow plates.
We’ve had drivers fined £100 or more for having black plates on modern classics like 1985 Golfs or 90s BMWs. It might look cool, but it’s not worth the hassle.
Are they MOT compliant?
Only if your car qualifies. MOT testers will flag it if your plate doesn’t match your car’s age or DVLA status. If in doubt, don’t risk it.
