Can I Design My Own Number Plate?
We get this one nearly every day. You’ve got a unique idea, maybe a nickname, initials, or something clever you want to put on your car. But what are the actual rules? Can you design your own number plate in the UK? The short answer is yes, but with limits.
What you can customise
You can design your own plate when it comes to the style and how it looks physically, but not the actual combination of letters and numbers unless you’ve got a private registration. Here’s what you’re allowed to do:
- Choose the type of plate: standard, 3D Gel, 4D, or 4D Gel
- Pick from approved borders and flags (like the UK, GB, Union Jack)
- Choose a plate size that fits your car, including short and square plates
- Decide how it gets fixed, sticky pads or screws
Using our Online Plate Maker, you can preview your plate and customise the design exactly how you want it. It's easy to use and takes just minutes.
What you can’t do
This is where some people get caught out. You can’t make up your own reg number. Every number plate in the UK must follow DVLA rules. If it’s not already assigned by DVLA or owned as a private plate, you can’t use it. You also can’t:
- Use symbols, emojis or custom logos
- Change the spacing or layout to spell names or phrases
- Pick your own font or make the letters coloured
- Add any background images or patterns
Doing any of that could land you in trouble. We've had people send us photos of old plates they made elsewhere, and half of them wouldn’t pass an MOT. Not worth it.
Thinking of buying a personalised reg?
If you really want a reg that spells your name or something unique, you can buy one from the DVLA or from a registered private dealer. Prices vary a lot, some start at a few hundred pounds, while others go into the thousands. Once you've bought it, we can make the physical plate for you, legally and properly.
Lots of customers do this for birthdays, anniversaries, or just to make their car stand out a bit more. And once it’s yours, it stays yours. You can move it from car to car or put it on retention.
Why we keep it legal
We’re not just here to sell you a plate. We want you to have one that actually gets through MOTs and doesn't cause problems down the line. All the plates we make follow DVLA guidelines and British Standard BS AU 145e. That’s how we make sure your car stays road legal.
Our team checks every order before it’s made. If anything looks off, we’ll get in touch before printing. So if you’re ever unsure, just ask.
Final word
Designing your number plate is a great way to personalise your car, but it has to be done properly. Stick to the rules, and you’ll end up with a plate that looks sharp and keeps you out of trouble.
