Replacement Number Plate for Land Rover
Need a replacement plate for a Land Rover or Range Rover? We make road legal number plates built to BS AU 145e for the full current range, from the Defender to the Range Rover, in all seven finishes at the single UK-standard size, 520mm x 111mm.
Which Land Rover and Range Rover models we cover
We supply plates for the current range: Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque. Fitment is consistent across this range, since Land Rover and Range Rover models generally share a generous, upright front plate recess, so the standard plate sits well whichever model you drive, including the deeper 4D and gel finishes.
Defender. The front recess takes any of the seven finishes without trouble, but a meaningful share of Defenders go off-road, and the front plate area picks up more mud and grime than a typical SUV's does. That is a maintenance point rather than a fitment one, worth bearing in mind if your Defender sees regular green-laning or a muddy farm track.
Discovery and Discovery Sport. Both take the standard plate cleanly, with no particular pattern in the finishes owners choose. It is genuinely down to taste.
Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque. These sit at the premium end of the range, with a deep, upright recess that comfortably accommodates the more dimensional finishes, and this is where owners lean more often towards the deeper 4D, 5D Gel and Black Diamond styles, matching the cars' more formal positioning.
Fitting a replacement plate on a Land Rover or Range Rover, step by step
- Check how your current plate is fixed. Most factory plates are drilled and screwed into a moulded plate holder, though some models use adhesive pads instead.
- If drilled, standard UK plate screws, usually 5mm or 6mm, match the existing holes on nearly every model in the range.
- On a Defender that has seen recent off-road use, clear any dried mud from the recess and bumper before you start. Caked-on mud can stop a new plate sitting flush and hide the fixing holes underneath.
- Confirm whether your plate holder is drilled or adhesive before ordering fixings. Drilling into a holder designed for adhesive can crack it, and adhesive pads on a holder designed for screws will not hold securely long term.
- Offer the new plate up to the recess before fixing it permanently, and check it sits flush and square, particularly with a deeper 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond finish.
Which finish suits which Land Rover
This is personal taste, not a fitment rule, since all seven finishes are equally road legal when built to spec. Range Rover and Range Rover Sport owners often choose the deeper 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond finishes, where the raised, glossy black lettering matches the model's premium positioning. Defender owners more often go the other way, choosing the simpler Standard or 3D Gel look, closer to the vehicle's plainer, utilitarian design language. Discovery and Discovery Sport owners do not show a strong lean either way. If you plan to take a Defender off-road regularly, that is a practical reason, not just a styling one, to lean towards a flatter finish, covered below.
Caring for your plate on a Land Rover or Range Rover
A Defender used off-road needs more regular plate care than the rest of the range. Mud and grit collect around the recess of a raised or domed finish far more than on a flat plate, and if it dries first it can be abrasive when you eventually clean it off. Rinse with plain water to loosen dried mud before wiping, and avoid jet-washing a raised gel or Black Diamond finish at close range, since the pressure can work at the edge of the raised characters over time.
Across the rest of the range, a soft cloth and ordinary car shampoo is all any of our finishes need. Avoid abrasive pads or stiff brushes on any domed or gel plate, and if your Range Rover goes through a regular hand wash or detail, mention the finish to whoever is cleaning it.
Common mistakes Land Rover and Range Rover owners make when ordering a replacement plate
- Ordering a deep 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond finish for a Defender that regularly goes off-road, then finding the recess holds mud that is a hassle to keep clean.
- Assuming Discovery and Discovery Sport share identical plate holders because they share a name, rather than checking the specific model before ordering fixings.
- Not checking whether the plate holder is drilled or adhesive-fixed before assuming standard screws will do the job.
Road legal compliance
Every plate we supply is built to BS AU 145e, the mandatory UK standard since 1 September 2021: 79mm character height, 50mm width (except the figure 1 and letter I), 14mm stroke, 11mm character spacing, a 33mm age-identifier gap, 11mm margins, solid black characters on a white retroreflective background at the front and yellow at the rear, plus our supplier name and postcode. Raised, gel and diamond-cut finishes are dimensional, not colour effects, so a 4D, gel or Black Diamond plate is just as road legal as a Standard plate. Correct spacing, font and reflectivity also keep a plate machine-readable to ANPR cameras, not just visually compliant. We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.

FAQs about Replacement Number Plate for Land Rover
1. Will a replacement plate fit my Land Rover or Range Rover without drilling new holes?
Usually, provided you order the same fixing type as your existing plate. Check whether it is drilled or adhesive-fixed before ordering.
2. Do 4D or Black Diamond plates fit properly on a Defender?
Yes, the recess is roomy enough for any of our seven finishes. The consideration is maintenance rather than fitment, since a deep raised finish will collect more mud around the characters than a flatter one if your Defender goes off-road regularly. View our 4D plates and Black Diamond options for more details.
3. Which finish suits a Range Rover or Range Rover Sport best?
There is no fixed rule, but owners of these two models more often choose the deeper 4D, 5D Gel or Black Diamond finishes, which suit the cars' premium positioning. A Standard or 3D Gel plate is equally road legal if you prefer a plainer look.
4. Is there a fully electric Land Rover or Range Rover eligible for a green flash plate?
Not currently. There is no fully electric model in the range on sale today, so the green flash option does not apply, though Range Rover has announced electric models are coming.
5. Are all seven of your finishes road legal on a Land Rover or Range Rover?
Yes, provided the plate is fitted correctly and kept clean and visible. Every finish, from Standard through to Black Diamond, is built to BS AU 145e.
