Are Short Number Plates Legal in the UK?
A lot of people want a clean, minimal look for their number plate, especially if they’ve got a private reg with fewer characters. So it’s no surprise we get asked all the time, are short number plates actually legal in the UK?
The short answer
Yes, short plates are legal, but only if they still meet DVLA rules. That means the character size, spacing, and margins must follow the British Standard BS AU 145e. You can’t just trim a plate to make it tiny.
What makes a short plate legal?
- The registration must be short to begin with, like “J4 MES”, you can’t squash a normal length reg into a small plate
- Letters and numbers must be the legal height and width
- Correct spacing between characters is required
- Margins around the text must be kept
- The plate must still be reflective and readable
We’ve made loads of legal short plates for customers with private regs. When done right, they look smart and keep you fully road legal.
Where people get it wrong
We had someone once send us a plate they bought elsewhere, it was chopped down so much that the spacing was off and the side margins were almost gone. It looked nice but failed their MOT, and they ended up ordering a correct version from us.
Another mistake is cutting down standard plates for shorter names like “K8” or “TOM1” but ignoring the required spacing. You’ll get pulled over or fail an MOT if the spacing doesn’t check out.
Real example from a customer
Last month, we had a customer named Sarah who had recently bought a private reg for her Mini. It was a short one, just five characters and she wanted a plate to match the size. The first set she got elsewhere was trimmed too tight. There wasn’t enough spacing between the letters, and the margin on one side was nearly gone. She failed her MOT because of it.
She came to us and we explained the legal limits. We made her a proper short plate that kept all the DVLA spacing rules but still looked compact. When she went back for her MOT, she passed without any problems. She even sent us a photo to say thanks.
Our advice
If you have a short private reg, you can absolutely go for a compact plate, just make sure it’s made properly. Always order from a trusted supplier who knows the legal sizing rules.
