Replacement Number Plate for Volkswagen
Need a replacement number plate for your Volkswagen? We make road legal plates for any Volkswagen model, from Polo to Touareg, built to BS AU 145e in all seven of our finishes, at the single 520mm x 111mm size fitted to every model in the range. Same-day dispatch if you order before 2pm.
Which Volkswagen models we cover
Every plate we make is the same 520mm x 111mm size, front and rear, so fitment across the Volkswagen range comes down to the plate recess and trim on each car rather than a size choice. Here is how the range breaks down.
Hatchback and supermini: Polo, Golf. A straightforward, upright front bumper recess with generous clearance. Any of the seven finishes fits without issue.
Performance hatchback: Golf GTI, Golf R. A slightly more recessed plate mount than the standard Golf, set in behind the honeycomb grille surround. A close, well-trimmed fit matters more here, since there is less spare clearance around the plate edges.
Saloon and estate: Passat, Arteon. The Arteon carries a low, wide front end with a more recessed mount than the Passat, closer in tone to the GTI and R than to a standard hatchback.
SUV and crossover: Tiguan, T-Roc, T-Cross, Taigo, Touareg. Generous, upright mounting with plenty of clearance on all five. We rarely hear of fitment issues on this group, and none of the seven finishes cause a problem, including the deeper 5D Gel 5mm and Black Diamond options.
Electric: ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7. A distinct front panel design with no conventional grille. The plate sits in a dedicated recessed housing built into this smooth panel, and on most ID models it is well suited to adhesive mounting rather than drilling.
Fitting a replacement plate on a Volkswagen, step by step
Before you order, check how your existing plate is fixed. Volkswagen uses both drilled and adhesive-backed mounting depending on model, year and trim, and finding this out after your new plate arrives is one of the most common causes of delay.
- Check the current fixing method. Two visible screw heads mean it is drilled. A flush plate with no visible fixings is adhesive-mounted.
- Match your screw size if drilled. UK plates are typically fitted with 5mm or 6mm plastic-topped screws, coloured to match the plate background. Screws in good condition can usually be reused.
- Expect adhesive mounting on the ID range. The front panel housing is moulded into a painted panel rather than a plain bumper with pre-drilled holes, so it is usually adhesive-pad friendly. Do not assume it mounts the same as a combustion Golf.
- Take extra care on the GTI, R and Arteon's tighter recess. Our 4D and gel plates sit slightly proud of the mounting surface, because of the raised acrylic or resin. Check the plate sits flush all the way round before fixing it permanently.
Which finish suits which Volkswagen
This comes down to taste and to how the car is used, not a rule.
GTI and R performance variants often suit the deeper 4D 5mm, 4D Gel 3mm or 5D Gel 5mm finishes, adding presence to a car already built around a sportier stance. Given the tighter front recess on these models, it is worth checking your plate holder before committing to the deepest option.
Everyday Polo, Golf and Tiguan owners often suit the Standard or 3D Gel finish, a straightforward, factory-style look. ID range electric owners frequently lean the same way, closer to the minimal design language Volkswagen uses across the range, though this is taste, not a fitment restriction, any of the seven finishes will fit an ID model.
The EV green flash option for electric Volkswagens
Green flash plates are available for genuinely zero-emission vehicles. Within the Volkswagen range, that means the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7, VW's fully electric models. It does not apply to the Golf GTE or any other plug-in hybrid Volkswagen, since a plug-in hybrid still has a combustion engine and does not meet the zero-emission criteria, regardless of its electric-only range.
The green flash is optional, not mandatory. It is commonly understood to help with recognition under some local low-emission and clean air schemes, but the rules and any benefit vary by council, so check locally rather than assuming a specific saving applies where you live. If you drive an ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 or ID.7, we can add the green flash to any of the seven finishes at the point of ordering.
Caring for your plate on a Volkswagen
GTI and R owners see their cars go through regular detailing more often than most, and high-pressure water at close range can catch the edge of a raised gel dome or 4D acrylic character. If your car is washed weekly at a detail-focused site, mention the plate to whoever is washing it, or consider a flatter finish.
Tiguan and Touareg owners in muddier or rural conditions may find a flatter finish easier to keep clean, since there is no raised edge for mud and road film to build up against. Whatever finish you choose, a plate cloth and a rinse before wiping keeps the reflective background performing properly at night, which matters for ANPR and MOT readability as well as looks.
Common mistakes Volkswagen owners make when ordering a replacement plate
- Not checking the GTI or R's tighter recess before ordering a deep raised finish. The 5D Gel 5mm and Black Diamond finishes sit further proud than a Standard plate, so check clearance first rather than assuming it fits exactly as it did on a standard Golf.
- Assuming all ID range models mount identically to a combustion Golf. The ID range's recessed housing and painted front panel is a different mounting setup to a Golf or Polo's bumper-mounted plate.
- Not confirming drilled versus adhesive before ordering. This is the most frequent cause of a fitting delay across the range.
Road legal compliance
BS AU 145e is the mandatory UK standard for road legal number plates, in force since 1 September 2021. It sets fixed character height at 79mm, character width at 50mm except for the numeral 1 and letter I, stroke width of 14mm, character spacing of 11mm, a 33mm gap before the age identifier, and 11mm margins, on a white retroreflective background at the front and yellow at the rear, with single solid black characters. The plate must also show the supplier's name and postcode. Correct spacing, font and reflectivity are not just about legibility either, they are also what keep a plate machine-readable to ANPR cameras used for enforcement and traffic monitoring.
Your Volkswagen's factory-fitted plate is normally already built to this specification, so the safest approach when ordering a replacement is to match it exactly rather than choosing a different layout or spacing. A plate that does not conform to BS AU 145e can result in an MOT advisory or failure even if it looks correct at a glance, since the test checks font, spacing and reflectivity, not just legibility.
We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.

FAQs about Replacement Number Plate for Volkswagen
1. Will a raised 4D or gel plate fit my Golf GTI or R without rubbing on the recess?
Yes, but check your plate holder first. The GTI and R have a more recessed front mount than the standard Golf, so a close, well-trimmed fit matters more with a raised finish. The consideration is a neat fit within the recess, not a physical clearance problem. Most owners fit these themselves using the same screw or adhesive method as the original plate.
2. Am I eligible for a green flash plate on my Volkswagen?
Only if you drive a genuinely zero-emission model, which within the Volkswagen range means the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 or ID.7. Plug-in hybrids such as the Golf GTE do not qualify, since they still have a combustion engine. The green flash is optional and any local benefit varies by council, so check locally. View our custom number plate options for green flash availability.
3. Will a replacement plate pass my Volkswagen's next MOT?
It will if it is built to BS AU 145e, the current mandatory standard, with correct character height, spacing and reflectivity. All seven of our finishes are made to this specification.
4. Is my Volkswagen's plate drilled or adhesive-mounted?
Check your current plate. Two visible screw heads mean it is drilled. A flush plate with no visible fixings is adhesive-mounted. The ID range's front panel housing is usually adhesive-pad friendly, while most combustion Golf, Polo and Tiguan models use drilled screws.
5. Does the plate size differ between Volkswagen models?
No. We supply one size, 520mm x 111mm, front and rear, which fits the plate recess on any current Volkswagen model, from Polo to Touareg and across the ID electric range.
