If you need a replacement number plate for a Toyota, every current model, from an Aygo X to a bZ4X, takes the same 520mm x 111mm plate size front and rear, so fitment is never the complicated part. What matters more is which finish suits the car, whether it qualifies for a green flash plate, and whether the plate meets BS AU 145e. Legal & Show Plates builds every plate to that standard from Bradford, and this page covers the Toyota-specific detail we get asked about most.
Which Toyota models we cover
We supply plates for the full current UK Toyota range: the Aygo X, Yaris and Yaris Cross in the smaller bracket, Corolla, Corolla Cross, C-HR and C-HR+ as the family and crossover tier, RAV4, Land Cruiser and Highlander as the larger SUVs, Camry and Prius as the saloon and hybrid models, bZ4X and bZ4X Touring as Toyota's electric models (covered below), and GR86, Supra and GR GT at the performance end, covered next.
Also worth mentioning are models Toyota no longer sells new but that remain common on the road: the Auris, discontinued when the Corolla name returned in 2019, and the earlier Avensis and Verso. Fitting and plate size match the current range.
Fitting a replacement plate on a Toyota, step by step
Fitment across the range is genuinely straightforward, with no unusual bumper recess or bracket quirks documented for Toyota. The general process:
- Remove the old plate, usually two or four screws, occasionally clips.
- Check the mounting area for damage or old adhesive and clean it.
- Offer the new plate up to confirm the fixing holes line up.
- Fit new screws, or reuse sound existing ones, without overtightening into plastic surrounds.
- Check the plate sits flat and square, an angled plate can affect ANPR readability.
If your Toyota uses a push-fit or adhesive-only surround, the same logic applies, just take care not to flex or crack the plate on removal.
Which finish suits which Toyota
This is a styling choice, not a technical requirement. On the GR86, Supra and GR GT, a 4D or 5D gel finish suits the sportier design language, raised black characters read well against a performance stance without shouting about it. On everyday models like the Corolla, Yaris and RAV4, plenty of owners prefer a Standard or 3D Gel plate that keeps things clean and factory-looking. The Camry and Land Cruiser, being larger and more premium-feeling, tend to carry a 4D 5mm or Black Diamond finish well. It is preference on top of a compliant plate, not a compliance decision.
The EV green flash option, and why "hybrid" does not mean electric
This is where we see the most confusion from Toyota owners. The green flash is a small green rectangle on the left of the plate, only for genuinely zero-emission, fully battery-electric vehicles. In Toyota's current range, that is the bZ4X and bZ4X Touring, the only two models that qualify.
Every other Toyota with "hybrid" in its description, covering most of the range including the Yaris, Yaris Cross, Corolla, Corolla Cross, C-HR, C-HR+, RAV4 and Camry, does not qualify. These are self-charging or plug-in hybrids, still running on petrol some or all of the time, so they sit outside the eligibility rules regardless of how heavily Toyota's marketing leans on "hybrid" and "self-charging." It is a reasonable assumption given how the cars are sold, but it is not correct. Even a plug-in hybrid Prius does not qualify.
If you have a bZ4X or bZ4X Touring, any local benefit from the green flash, such as low-emission zone access, varies by council, so check locally rather than assuming a saving.
Caring for your plate on a Toyota
Care is much the same as for any plate. Wash with plain water and a soft cloth, avoid abrasive pads that could scratch a gel or diamond-cut finish, and go easy on jet washing directly against the edges, as it can work at the fixings over time. Rinse off winter road salt and grit regularly, and replace a plate that becomes cracked, badly scratched, or hard to read, as a damaged plate can fail an MOT check.
Common mistakes Toyota owners make when ordering a replacement plate
- Assuming a hybrid Toyota, such as a Corolla, RAV4 or Prius, qualifies for a green flash plate when only the fully electric bZ4X and bZ4X Touring do.
- Ordering registration details from memory rather than the V5C, a single transposed character means a remake.
- Assuming finishes come in different sizes, every finish we offer is the same 520mm x 111mm.
- Leaving fitting until the last minute before an MOT rather than allowing a few days for delivery.
Road legal compliance
Every plate we build follows BS AU 145e, the standard for UK number plates since 1 September 2021: 79mm character height, 50mm character width except for the numeral 1 and letter I, 14mm stroke width, 11mm spacing between characters, a 33mm gap before the age identifier, 11mm margins, and a white retroreflective background at the front with yellow at the rear. Characters are single solid black, no gradient or outline effects. Raised finishes such as 3D Gel, 4D, 5D Gel, and the diamond-cut Black Diamond, are dimensional rather than colour effects, so compliance is unaffected. Every plate carries our supplier name and postcode. A plate built correctly to BS AU 145e, with the right character spacing, font and reflectivity, is also what keeps it reliably readable by ANPR cameras.
We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.

FAQs about Replacement Number Plate for Toyota
Q: Does my hybrid Toyota qualify for a green flash plate?
No, not unless it is a bZ4X or bZ4X Touring. Other hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, including the Yaris, Corolla, C-HR, RAV4, Camry and Prius, still produce tailpipe emissions and do not meet the zero-emission requirement.
Q: What size plate does my Toyota need?
520mm x 111mm, front and rear, the same across the current and discontinued range. We only offer this one size.
Q: Will a 4D or gel finish still pass BS AU 145e?
Yes. The raised or diamond-cut effect is dimensional, not a colour change, so compliance is unaffected.
Q: Do you fit the plates for me?
We are an online seller and do not offer fitting or premises visits, but fitting is a simple screw or clip job, as covered above.
Q: Are you a DVLA registered supplier?
No. We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.
