Ordering a replacement plate for a Hyundai is straightforward: no unusual fixing point, no oddball size, every current model takes the standard 520mm x 111mm plate front and rear. What matters is the right finish, getting the compliance details right, and knowing whether your Hyundai qualifies for a green flash.
Which Hyundai models we cover
We supply replacement plates for the full current UK Hyundai range, and older models still on the road.
At the smaller end, the i10, i20, Inster and Bayon suit buyers wanting a compact, easy-to-park car. Most replacements here are a faded original, kerb damage, or an upgrade to a smarter finish.
The Kona is the model to watch for naming: Hyundai sells a petrol/hybrid Kona and a separate Kona Electric, different vehicles for green flash purposes, covered below. Tucson and Santa Fe are the mid-size and large SUVs, both hybrid or plug-in hybrid rather than pure petrol or diesel.
The Ioniq range is Hyundai's electric line-up: Ioniq 3, Ioniq 5 and 5 N, Ioniq 6 and 6 N, and the seven-seat Ioniq 9. All are fully electric and all qualify for the green flash.
Worth flagging: Hyundai has exited the family hatchback segment. The i30, including the i30 N hot hatch, and the i20 N were both discontinued, production ending 2026, no direct replacement confirmed. The i30 sold in real volume for years, so plenty of our orders are still for i30s whose owners are keeping them running, discontinuation doesn't affect getting a compliant plate. The older ix20 MPV is another discontinued model we still see regularly.
Fitting a replacement plate on a Hyundai, step by step
Fitment is straightforward, no documented Hyundai-specific quirks.
- Check the current fixing method: screws into threaded holes, or adhesive pads, depending on model and trim.
- Remove the old plate, keeping any screws if reusing the same fixing.
- Clean the mounting area so new adhesive pads bond properly.
- Offer the new plate up and check it sits flush and square before fixing.
- Fix it the same way as before, or ask us if switching between screws and pads.
- Check it's secure and hasn't fouled a sensor, badge or trim piece.
If unsure, our fitting guide has more detail, or check the handbook.
Which finish suits which Hyundai
The finish is a styling choice. On the Ioniq 5 N and 6 N, genuinely performance models, a raised finish like 4D or 5D Gel adds presence and shadow depth to a car built to stand out. On the everyday range (i10, i20, Inster, Bayon), owners often prefer a cleaner, flatter look, so Standard or 3D Gel suits better. On the Kona, Kona Electric, Tucson and Santa Fe it's a fairly even mix, often driven by chrome versus gloss black trim, Black Diamond pairs well with darker trim. It's styling, not compliance, every finish meets BS AU 145e.
The EV green flash option for electric Hyundais
Fully electric Hyundais can add a small green flash to the left of the plate: Inster, Kona Electric, and the whole Ioniq range (3, 5, 5 N, 6, 6 N, 9).
Worth flagging clearly: the plain Kona (petrol or hybrid) does not qualify, only Kona Electric does, and the two share a name closely enough to cause genuine confusion. Check your V5C or the badging if unsure. Tucson and Santa Fe, being hybrid or plug-in hybrid, don't qualify either.
Whether the flash brings any practical benefit, such as low-emission zone access, depends entirely on your council. Check locally rather than assuming a saving.
Caring for your plate on a Hyundai
Avoid jet washing at close range and high pressure, particularly on raised finishes like 4D or 5D Gel where the edge is more exposed. A hand wash, or a jet wash at a sensible distance, is fine. Wipe the plate dry rather than letting grime sit, and check periodically that fixings haven't loosened, especially after winter when cold affects adhesive pads.
Common mistakes Hyundai owners make when ordering a replacement plate
- Confusing the petrol/hybrid Kona with Kona Electric, ending up with a green flash on a car that doesn't qualify.
- Assuming Tucson or Santa Fe qualify because they're hybrid, when only fully electric Hyundais are eligible.
- Not checking registration details against the current V5C before ordering.
- Ordering a size other than 520mm x 111mm, every Hyundai takes this one size front and rear.
- Choosing a raised finish for a car jet washed frequently at close range, then finding the edge wears sooner than a flat plate would.
Road legal compliance
Every plate, whatever finish, is built to BS AU 145e, the mandatory UK standard in force since 1 September 2021: 79mm character height, 50mm width (except the numeral 1 and letter I), 14mm stroke, 11mm character spacing, a 33mm gap before the age identifier, 11mm margins, white retroreflective front and yellow rear, single solid black characters. Raised or dimensional finishes such as gel or diamond-cut are a matter of shape, not colour, so they stay compliant. Every plate shows our name and postcode as supplier. A plate built correctly to BS AU 145e, with the right spacing, font and reflectivity, is also what keeps it reliably readable by ANPR cameras.
We are not a DVLA registered supplier. Our plates are built to DVLA's published rules under BS AU 145e.

FAQ about Replacement Number Plate for Hyundai
Q: Do all Hyundai models take the same size plate?
Yes. Every current Hyundai, i10 to Ioniq 9, takes the standard 520mm x 111mm plate front and rear, no short, small or square size.
Q: My Kona doesn't show a green flash option, why not?
Check whether your car is the petrol/hybrid Kona or the Kona Electric. Only Kona Electric is eligible, despite sharing the name.
Q: Can I still get a replacement plate for my i30 now it's discontinued?
Yes. Discontinuation in 2026 doesn't affect ordering, we'll build one to your registration in any of our seven finishes.
Q: Is a raised finish like 4D or 5D Gel still road legal on a Hyundai?
Yes, provided it meets BS AU 145e, which all our plates do. Raised finishes change shape, not colour, so compliance isn't affected.
Q: Will the green flash save me money in my area?
It depends on your council. Some low-emission zones offer a benefit for zero-emission vehicles, some don't, so check locally rather than assuming a saving.
Q: How quickly will my Hyundai plate arrive?
Order before 2pm and we dispatch same day via Royal Mail, 1 to 3 working days, with a tracked 24 hour option available.
