What Makes a Number Plate Road Legal in the UK?
We get asked this a lot, and to be fair, it can be confusing. Not every plate you see on the road is actually legal. Some look fine at a glance, but they wouldn’t pass an MOT. So here’s a simple guide. No fluff. Just what you need to know.
Start with the basics
To be legal, your plate needs to follow the rules set by DVLA. These are not suggestions. If your plate breaks these, it’s illegal.
-
Front plate must be white
-
Rear plate must be yellow
-
Black characters only
-
Must be made with reflective material
No background patterns. No tints. No coloured letters. If you’re using 3D or 4D, the raised letters must still be black and clear to read.
Font and size
There’s only one font allowed in the UK. It’s the standard one you see on most cars. You can’t use italics or script fonts. Even if it looks neat, it’s a fail.
Letters must be 79mm tall and 50mm wide (except for the number 1 or letter I). The space between each character has to be 11mm.
Some people try to mess with spacing to make names or words. That will fail an MOT and might get you pulled over.
Spacing and layout
Plates must follow this format:
-
AB12 CDE
You can’t put a space where you feel like. That’s tampering, and it can be seen as trying to mislead. ANPR cameras won’t read it properly either.
British Standard mark
Every legal plate must show the British Standard number: BS AU 145e
If it’s missing, your plate’s not legal. Ours come with that as standard.
Plate supplier name and postcode
This is required too. Every legal plate must show who made it. You’ll see our business name and postcode printed small at the bottom. It’s not advertising, it’s regulation.
Can 3D and 4D plates be legal?
Yes. As long as the letters are black and meet all the same size and spacing rules, they’re fine. We use raised gel or laser-cut acrylic, but always within DVLA rules. Some sellers go overboard with colours and effects, but we don’t mess about with that.
One last thing
If your plate’s cracked, peeling, faded or dirty so that it can’t be read properly, that can also make it illegal. Police and MOT testers aren’t just checking layout. They check condition too.
Keep it simple
If you're ever unsure, ask. We check every plate that goes out. If it’s not legal, we’ll let you know before we even make it. There’s no point selling something that’s going to get you fined.
