Show Plates vs Road-Legal Plates

Show Plates vs Road-Legal Plates – What’s the Difference?

This one confuses a lot of people. We get asked almost every day about the difference between show plates and legal plates. It’s not just about looks. There are real legal rules involved, and knowing the difference can save you from a fine or MOT fail.

What are road-legal plates?

Road-legal number plates are the ones that meet all DVLA and British Standard requirements. They’re made using specific materials, spacing, fonts, and have the right markings. This includes:

  • Standard UK font
  • Correct spacing (no squashed or spread-out letters)
  • White background at the front, yellow at the back
  • Black characters only
  • Supplier name and postcode
  • BS AU 145e mark

These rules are there to help police, cameras, and MOT testers easily identify your car. If your plate breaks any of these, it’s not legal.

So what are show plates then?

Show plates are made for display use only. That means car shows, photo shoots, or use on private land. They might have:

  • Custom fonts
  • Unique spacing to spell words
  • Background images or coloured text
  • Missing the BS mark and supplier info

They’re made to stand out, not follow the rules. And because of that, they’re not legal to drive with on public roads.

Why people get confused

Some websites sell both without being clear. Others don’t explain what’s road legal and what’s not. Then you’ve got sellers on marketplaces offering plates that break all the rules, with no warnings.

At Legal Show Plates, we only sell road-legal plates unless the customer specifically asks for a show plate. And even then, we let you know it’s not legal for road use.

What happens if you drive with a show plate?

You can be fined. Your car can fail its MOT. You might even get points in some cases. And if you're in an accident and the plate can’t be read clearly, it could delay things with police or insurers.

We’ve had customers come to us after being pulled over, asking us to make the plate properly this time. It's just not worth the hassle.

When can I use a show plate?

If your car is only used off-road, or you're at a track day or car show, a show plate might be fine. But it should never be your everyday plate on public roads.

Final thoughts from our team

We get it. A stylised plate can look great. But it’s not worth risking your licence or a fine over. We’ve built our reputation on making plates that look smart and follow the rules.
