How To Transfer a Private Number Plate Step by Step
We get this one all the time. You’ve bought a private reg or moved your plate from another car, and now you need to get it transferred properly. It’s not as hard as it sounds, but there’s a few key steps to follow. Here’s how it works.
1. Check if the plate is already on a retention certificate
If you’ve bought the reg from a seller or website, it might already be held on a V778 (retention) certificate. This is what DVLA use to prove you own the right to that plate. If you have it, great—you can move to step 2.
If not, you’ll need to apply to put your current plate on retention before transferring.
2. Apply to assign the plate
You’ll need to use the DVLA’s online service or fill in a V317 form. Most people use the online version as it’s quicker.
You’ll need:
- The V5C logbook for the vehicle you want the plate on
- The retention certificate or donor vehicle details
- A card to pay the DVLA fee (usually £80 unless already paid)
Once DVLA process it, you’ll get confirmation by email or post. That’s when your plate is legally assigned.
3. Update insurance
Let your insurer know your reg has changed. This step gets missed a lot, but if your plate doesn’t match their records and something happens, it could delay your claim.
4. Make the plate
Once it’s all confirmed, you’re ready to get your new plate made. Use our Online Plate Maker to design the right style, 3D, 4D, or 4D Gel.
We’ll make sure it’s road legal and ship it same day if you order early.
5. Fit the plate properly
Use either sticky pads or screws. We include both in our fitting kit. Make sure you remove the old plates completely and clean the surface before sticking the new ones down.
