Do I Need an MOT to Get a New Number Plate Made?
This one trips people up quite a bit. You don’t actually need a valid MOT to buy a new number plate, but there are rules about what info you have to give us when you order. Here’s how it works.
You don’t need a current MOT to order a plate
Let’s say your car failed its MOT and you’re fixing it up. You can still order a new plate while it’s off the road. The MOT status of the car doesn’t affect your right to buy a replacement plate. What matters is proof that you own the vehicle and proof of your identity.
What we do need
To follow DVLA rules, we ask for two things:
- Proof of identity (like a driving licence, utility bill, or passport)
- Proof you’re allowed to use the reg number (like your V5C logbook or retention certificate)
Once we get those, we can make your plate. No MOT required.
Why people get confused
Some think that because MOTs are linked to registration and roadworthiness, you need a valid MOT before you can change plates. That’s not the case. You can change your number plate as long as the documents are in order.
We’ve had customers order plates for cars they’re restoring, or vehicles kept off-road on SORN. That’s completely fine — as long as the paperwork checks out.
But the car does need an MOT to be driven
Just to be clear — if your car has no MOT, you can’t legally drive it on the road, except to a pre-booked MOT test. Even with a shiny new plate. The plate won’t make the car legal if it’s not roadworthy.
We check everything for you
If you're not sure what you need to send, just ask. Our team checks every order before making it, so you won’t end up with a plate that can’t be used.
