Can My Number Plate Cause an MOT Fail
Yes, it definitely can. A lot of people don’t realise this until it's too late. We've had customers come to us in a panic after failing their MOT because of their number plate. And in most cases, it could’ve been avoided.
What do MOT testers check on number plates?
During your MOT, the tester will check both front and rear plates to make sure they:
- Are securely fixed
- Are clearly visible and not faded
- Use the legal UK font
- Have the right spacing and layout
- Meet size and reflectivity rules under BS AU 145e
Even small issues can lead to a fail. We’ve had someone fail just because the plate had a small crack running through the middle. Another came in after their gel plate letters started peeling because it wasn’t made properly by another supplier.
Real problems we've seen
A customer brought in their 4x4 last year with plates they'd bought online. They looked fine to the eye, but the font was slightly too narrow and spacing had been adjusted to spell a name. MOT failure straight away. They then ordered a legal set from us and passed without issue.
Another time, someone had a show plate on their daily car and forgot to swap it back before the MOT. The plate had a non-standard font and coloured background. Again, fail.
What to avoid
Don’t use:
- Tinted or smoked plates
- Custom fonts or spacing
- Plates that are cracked, faded or damaged
- Incorrect fixing (like taped on loosely)
Even dirt and grime can cause a fail if the plate isn’t readable. Always give them a clean before your MOT.

If your number plates look tired or have taken a few knocks, it’s best to get them replaced before the MOT. It’s a quick fix and avoids extra cost or hassle.
