Are 4D Number Plates MOT and Road Legal?

Are 4D Number Plates MOT and Road Legal?

It’s one of the most common questions we get. 4D plates have become massively popular in the last few years, but there’s still confusion around whether they’re legal. Let’s clear it up.

So, are 4D plates legal or not?

Yes, 4D number plates are road legal in the UK, as long as they meet the DVLA’s strict requirements. That means the characters must:

  • Be in the standard Charles Wright font
  • Be solid black with no effects or colouring
  • Be the correct size and spacing
  • Be made to British Standard BS AU 145e

If your 4D plate meets all those rules, it’s completely legal and will pass an MOT.

What can make a 4D plate fail?

We’ve seen a few examples where people bought cheap plates online that didn’t follow the rules. Here’s what can cause a fail:

  • Characters with coloured edges or tints
  • Incorrect spacing
  • Fonts that are too thick or fancy
  • Use of 3D or 4D effects on non compliant backgrounds

One customer came to us after failing an MOT with a plate they thought was fine. Turns out the letters were too thick, and spacing was off. They replaced it with our DVLA compliant plate and passed straight away.

Are 4D plates reflective?

Yes. The plate base must still be reflective, with black raised characters on top. This helps with visibility and ANPR camera reading. You can’t have tinted or coloured plates, even if the characters are black.

Can I use 4D plates on any vehicle?

Absolutely. As long as the reg itself is assigned to the car, you can use 4D plates on anything from daily drivers to sports cars. We’ve seen them on everything from new Golfs to Transit vans.

Final thoughts

4D plates look smart, but make sure you get them made properly. A lot of cheap suppliers don’t follow DVLA rules, and you’re the one who ends up paying the price.
