Everything You Need to Know About 3D Gel Number Plates

We get asked about 3D gel plates all the time, and it’s easy to see why. They look good, they stand out, and they give your car a clean, premium finish. Here at Legal Show Plates, we’ve been making them for years and honestly, most of us in the workshop have them on our own cars. So we’re answering the most common questions we get straight from the team.

Are 3D Gel Number Plates Legal?

Yes, 3D gel plates are completely legal, as long as they follow the DVLA rules. That means:

  • Characters must be black

  • Plates must be made from reflective material

  • The layout, font, and spacing must be correct

  • They must meet the British Standard (BS AU 145e)

When made properly, like the ones we produce, 3D gel plates are just as legal as any standard number plate.

Are 3D Gel Plates Worth It?

In our opinion, yes. Every car in our workshop with a private plate has 3D gel on it. They’ve got that raised, domed look that really makes them pop without being too flashy. If you want something different from flat printed plates but don’t want to go all-in with 4D, this is the perfect in-between.

They’re also tough. The gel top layer protects the letters, and they don’t fade or peel easily. If you like your car looking clean and smart, you’ll love 3D gel plates.

How Much Is a 3D Gel Plate?

Prices vary depending on what size or style you go for, but most single plates start around £30–£35, with full sets usually between £60 and £70. We also do same-day dispatch, so you’re not waiting ages to get them on your car.

You can design your own 3D gel plate using our Online Plate Maker in a few clicks.

What’s the Difference Between 3D Gel and 4D Gel Plates?

This is another one we hear a lot. The easiest way to explain it:

  • 3D gel plates have raised, soft-look letters made from resin gel

  • 4D gel plates use laser-cut acrylic letters stuck on top, sometimes with a gel coating too

So 3D looks rounded and glossy. 4D has a sharper, bolder edge to it. Both look great, it’s just about what suits your car.

Are 4D Gel Plates Legal with the DVLA?

Yes, same as with 3D gel. As long as they follow the DVLA rules, black letters, correct spacing and size, reflective background, and BS AU 145e compliance, they’re road legal.

We build all our 4D gel plates to meet those rules. Just don’t go adding tints, colours, or messing with the spacing, and you’ll be fine.

That covers the main questions we get on 3D gel plates. If you’ve got a personalised reg and want something that gives it a bit more style without going over the top, these are a brilliant choice. They’re legal, strong, and they just look spot on.
